Sydney, Australia — February 9, 2026
Isaac Herzog arrived in Sydney on Monday morning, beginning a four-day visit to Australia aimed at expressing solidarity with the country’s Jewish community following last year’s deadly attack at Bondi Beach.
While the visit is intended to offer support and reassurance, it has also sparked controversy and planned protests, driven by opposition to Israel’s policies toward Palestinians.
🤝 Visit Focused on Jewish Community Support
Speaking to the media after his arrival, President Herzog said he would meet Jewish communities across Australia to demonstrate unity and encouragement following the December 2025 Bondi Beach attack, which targeted a Jewish religious gathering.
“My goal is to stand with the community after the attack and strengthen their sense of solidarity,” Herzog said, adding that he would participate in multiple community events during his stay.
The visit is taking place at the invitation of Australia’s Governor-General and Prime Minister, and Herzog is expected to meet Jewish community leaders, attend major public gatherings, and hold discussions with senior Australian officials.
⚠️ Why Herzog’s Visit Has Triggered Controversy
Despite the official welcome, Herzog’s visit has drawn criticism from various groups in Australia due to Israel’s policies toward Palestinians.
More than 1,000 Australian Jews have signed an open letter opposing the visit, stating that President Herzog should not be formally welcomed amid the ongoing Israel–Palestine conflict.
Protest demonstrations have been announced in cities Herzog is expected to visit, including Canberra, Melbourne, and Sydney, according to activist groups.
🚨 Protests Planned, Heavy Security Deployed
In Sydney, organizers are planning a large rally and march in the city center on Monday evening. In response, authorities have implemented extensive security measures.
Officials in New South Wales confirmed that over 3,000 police officers have been deployed during Herzog’s visit. Approximately 500 officers are specifically assigned to manage and secure areas around planned demonstrations.
🔫 Bondi Beach Attack: Background
The visit follows the December 14 Bondi Beach shooting, which occurred during celebrations of a Jewish festival.
16 people were killed in the attack
The Australian government classified it as a terrorist incident
Authorities said the attacker was influenced by the ideology of Islamic State
The incident shocked the nation and raised concerns about antisemitism and violent extremism in Australia.
🌐 Diplomatic and Social Implications
Analysts say Herzog’s visit highlights the complex balance between diplomatic solidarity and domestic political sensitivities in Australia.
While the Australian government has emphasized its commitment to protecting Jewish communities, the protests reflect deep divisions within civil society, including among Jewish Australians, over the Israel–Palestine conflict.
