India maintains stable fuel supply despite crude oil prices rising to $116 per barrel

New Delhi, India — April 21, 2026

India’s fuel supply remains stable despite sharp fluctuations in global crude oil prices, government officials said Tuesday, seeking to reassure consumers and industries amid rising energy costs.

Speaking on the current energy scenario, Sujata Sharma, Joint Secretary at the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, outlined the government’s preparedness and supply-side strength, even as international oil prices have surged significantly in recent months.

Crude Oil Prices See Sharp Rise

According to official data, crude oil prices have witnessed a steep and rapid increase:

  • January 2026: Indian crude basket averaged around $63 per barrel
  • March 2026: Prices surged to nearly $113 per barrel
  • April 2026: Current average stands at approximately $116 per barrel

Despite this volatility, the government emphasized that retail fuel prices in India remain relatively stable and lower compared to several neighboring countries.

LPG and PNG Supply Status

The government also provided updates on domestic gas availability, highlighting continued supply efficiency and infrastructure expansion:

  • LPG Supply:
Cylinder delivery efficiency remains strong at 93%, although daily online bookings have slightly declined to around 4.5–4.6 million.
  • Focus on Smaller Cylinders:
To support migrant workers and smaller households, the government has increased availability of 5 kg LPG cylinders, supported by over 7,400 awareness camps nationwide.
  • PNG Expansion:
More than 568,000 new PNG connections have been added, with nearly 40,000 households shifting from LPG to piped natural gas.

Crackdown on Irregularities

Authorities have intensified monitoring to prevent black marketing and supply disruptions:

  • Over 2,200 surprise inspections conducted at fuel stations across the country
  • Refineries are operating at full capacity
  • Adequate crude oil reserves are available to meet domestic demand

No Impact on Dairy and Essential Sectors

Officials confirmed that key sectors such as dairy remain unaffected by fuel price volatility.

Pooja Rustagi, Director in the Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying, stated that there is no shortage of fuel, gas, or packaging materials, ensuring uninterrupted milk production, transportation, and distribution across India.

Market & Policy Outlook

Experts believe that while global crude prices may continue to fluctuate due to geopolitical and supply-side factors, India’s diversified sourcing strategy and strong refining capacity are helping maintain stability in domestic supply.

The government’s continued monitoring and infrastructure expansion are expected to play a key role in cushioning the impact of global energy shocks.
