West Indies Post Second-Highest Total in T20 World Cup History
Half-centuries from Shimron Hetmyer and Rovman Powell powered the West Indies to the second-highest total in T20 World Cup history.
After Zimbabwe won the toss and opted to bowl, the decision quickly backfired. Hetmyer, who was dropped twice, made the most of his reprieves, smashing a career-best 85 off 34 balls, including seven sixes and seven fours.
Powell contributed 59 runs, and the pair stitched together a match-defining 122-run partnership for the third wicket off just 52 balls. Sherfane Rutherford added late momentum with an unbeaten 31 off 13 deliveries, hitting two sixes and three fours.
West Indies lost an early wicket when Brandon King was dismissed for 9, but they recovered strongly, posting 55 runs in the powerplay and crossing the 100-run mark by the 10th over.
For Zimbabwe, Richard Ngarava and Blessing Muzarabani claimed two wickets each, conceding 47 and 42 runs respectively. Captain Sikandar Raza endured a tough spell, conceding 52 runs in three overs.
Zimbabwe Collapse Under Spin Pressure
Chasing a daunting target, Zimbabwe’s batting lineup faltered against disciplined spin bowling.
Left-arm spinner Gudakesh Motie delivered a career-best performance, taking four wickets for 28 runs. Akeal Hosein supported him with three wickets for 28 runs, while Matthew Forde picked up two wickets.
Zimbabwe were bowled out before completing their full 20 overs. Brad Evans top-scored with a quickfire 43 off 21 balls, hitting five sixes and two fours. Dion Myers (28) and Raza (27) were the only other batters to cross 20 runs. Four Zimbabwe batters failed to score.
Group 1 Points Table Impact
The emphatic win significantly boosted the West Indies’ net run rate, placing them in a strong semifinal position. With only two teams advancing from the group, upcoming fixtures will be crucial for South Africa and India as they aim to secure qualification.
The tournament now enters a decisive phase, with net run rate potentially playing a defining role in semifinal spots.
