Chennai — March 14, 2026

As the Election Commission of India is expected to announce the schedule for the Tamil Nadu Assembly Elections 2026, political activities across the state are gaining momentum. Actor-turned-politician Thalapathy Vijay’s party, Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK), has also intensified its preparations.

However, a recent internal discussion reportedly revealed a major challenge for the party: difficulty in identifying candidates with sufficient financial resources to run competitive election campaigns.

The issue surfaced during a virtual meeting convened by party organizer Bussy Anand, where regional coordinators and district leaders reviewed the party’s election readiness.

Financial Constraints Highlighted in Party Meeting

During the meeting, leaders discussed the practical challenges of contesting elections across the state. According to participants, many potential candidates do not have the financial capacity required for a large-scale election campaign.

While the Election Commission caps official campaign spending at ₹40 lakh per candidate, party members noted that the actual cost of running a competitive campaign can be significantly higher.

Sources indicated that around 130 district leaders participated in the meeting, where the financial status of potential candidates was openly discussed.

Alliance Option Suggested by Party Leaders

According to a senior party functionary, nearly three-quarters of the leaders present in the meeting suggested considering political alliances.

The suggestion reportedly emerged because the party is struggling to find candidates capable of funding their own campaigns, particularly in constituencies where strong organizational networks and financial backing are required.

So far, the party leadership has not formally announced any alliance plans.

Vijay Earlier Promised Independent Political Challenge

When launching Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK), actor and political leader Vijay had stated that the party would contest independently against major political forces in the state, including the DMK, AIADMK, and BJP.

The party positioned itself as a new political alternative in Tamil Nadu’s political landscape.

However, the recent discussions suggest that the party leadership may need to reassess its electoral strategy as the elections approach.

Strategic Decisions Yet to Be Finalized

For now, TVK leaders say the party is reviewing its options and evaluating possible strategies ahead of the election announcement.

The internal discussions have also highlighted a broader political reality: mobilizing supporters for a new political movement may be easier than securing the financial resources required for large-scale electoral campaigns.

With the Tamil Nadu Assembly Elections 2026 approaching, the coming weeks may prove crucial for the party’s final strategy.
