Sensex Jumps 480 Points, Nifty Closes Above 25,700 as Banks, Auto Stocks Rally

Mumbai, India – February 23, 2026

Indian equity benchmarks closed higher on Monday, supported by gains in banking, auto and financial stocks, as improved global sentiment lifted investor confidence.

The 30-share BSE Sensex climbed 479.95 points, or 0.58%, to settle at 83,294.66. During intraday trade, the index advanced as much as 671.44 points to touch a high of 83,486.15.

The 50-share Nifty 50 gained 141.75 points, or 0.55%, to close at 25,713.00, after hitting an intraday peak of 25,771.45.

The Indian rupee strengthened by 7 paise to end at 90.87 against the U.S. dollar.

Sectoral Gains Drive Rally

Within the Sensex pack, Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone emerged as the top gainer, rising 2.98%. Other notable gainers included Kotak Mahindra Bank, UltraTech Cement, Power Grid Corporation of India, HDFC Bank, and State Bank of India.

On the downside, technology stocks such as Infosys, Tata Consultancy Services, and HCL Technologies faced selling pressure.

Global Factors in Focus

Market experts said domestic equities reacted positively after reports that the Supreme Court of the United States rejected certain tariff measures linked to former U.S. President Donald Trump, easing trade-related concerns.

Weakness in the U.S. dollar and softer 10-year Treasury yields also supported emerging markets, although analysts cautioned that near-term volatility could persist.

Asian markets ended higher, with Hong Kong’s Hang Seng rising 2.53% and South Korea’s Kospi gaining nearly 1%. European markets traded mixed mid-session.

Brent crude slipped 0.38% to $71.49 per barrel. According to exchange data, foreign institutional investors sold equities worth ₹934.61 crore on Friday, while domestic institutional investors bought shares worth ₹2,637.15 crore.

Friday had also seen gains, with the Sensex closing 316.57 points higher at 82,814.71 and the Nifty ending 116.90 points up at 25,571.25.
