Kochi, India – February 27, 2026
The Kerala High Court’s division bench on Thursday lifted the 15-day stay imposed on the release of The Kerala Story 2, clearing the way for the film’s theatrical release.
The earlier stay had been issued by a single-judge bench led by Justice Bechu Kurian Thomas. However, the division bench comprising Justice S.A. Dharmadhikari and Justice P.V. Balakrishnan overturned that order, granting relief to the filmmakers.
Division Bench Overturns Earlier Order
The court had initially halted the release of The Kerala Story 2 for 15 days amid legal challenges. Petitioners had questioned the certification granted by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), alleging that the film portrayed Kerala in a misleading manner and could potentially disturb law and order.
Following the division bench’s decision, the stay has now been removed, and the filmmakers are legally permitted to proceed with the release.
Background of the Legal Dispute
Multiple petitions were filed before the High Court challenging the CBFC certification granted to the film. Petitioners argued that:
-
The film’s title and promotional materials allegedly misrepresented the state of Kerala.
-
Certain themes could potentially impact communal harmony.
-
Law and order concerns were raised in the submissions.
-
One petition sought directions to remove the word “Kerala” from the film’s title.
After reviewing the matter, the division bench reversed the single-judge decision. The court also directed that the CBFC re-examine the film.
Release Delayed Amid Court Proceedings
The Kerala Story 2 was originally scheduled for release on February 27. However, due to ongoing legal proceedings and the temporary stay order, the film could not be released as planned.
Reports also indicated that ticket refunds had been initiated during the period of uncertainty. With the stay now lifted, the film’s release can move forward.
The matter drew significant public attention due to its legal and political sensitivities. The High Court’s latest order brings temporary clarity to the release status of the film.
