Milan, Italy — February 2026
Public opposition to preparations for the 2026 Winter Olympics intensified in Italy on Saturday night after a peaceful protest in Milan turned violent, prompting police to deploy tear gas and water cannons to disperse crowds.
The demonstration, which began earlier in the day as a calm march through central Milan, escalated into clashes between protesters and law enforcement near areas linked to Olympic infrastructure. According to media reports, thousands of people took part in the daytime rally opposing the upcoming Winter Games.
Why Protesters Took to the Streets
Demonstrators argue that large-scale Olympic construction is damaging the environment, increasing the cost of living, and placing a social and economic burden on local residents. The march was organized by a group calling itself the Unsustainable Olympics Committee and drew participants from Milan, Lombardy, and other parts of northern Italy.
The crowd included environmental activists, students, housing rights groups, labor unions, pro-Palestinian organizations, and transfeminist collectives. Several protesters also accused the Italian government of enforcing harsh security measures and discriminating against racial and social minorities.

Authorities said a small group of protesters threw firecrackers and smoke bombs toward the athletes’ residential area, though none reached the buildings. Part of the march later diverted toward Via Benaco and Piazzale Corvetto, where clashes intensified and fireworks were allegedly thrown directly at police.
In response, law enforcement charged demonstrators and used water cannons and tear gas to restore order. Some police vehicles were also targeted during the unrest. Officials emphasized that the majority of protesters did not participate in violence and remained peaceful in the main square.
🇮🇹 Wider Impact and Security Concerns
The unrest came just one day after an official Olympic event held at San Siro Stadium, where the opening ceremony celebrations featured performances by Andrea Bocelli and **Mariah Carey separate incident, railway services in Bologna were severely disrupted. Italy’s transport minister said authorities are investigating possible deliberate sabotage of rail infrastructure, calling it a pre-planned act and warning of potential coordinated actions. Officials have not yet confirmed any direct link between the railway disruption and the Milan protests.

Italian officials reiterated their commitment to ensuring public safety while allowing lawful demonstrations. Investigations into the violence and property damage are ongoing, and security around Olympic-related sites has been tightened as preparations for the 2026 Winter Games continue.
