Delhi on High Alert Ahead of Republic Day After Intelligence Warns of Possible Terror Threat

New Delhi | January 18, 2026

India’s intelligence agencies have issued a high-level security alert for Delhi and several other major cities, warning of a possible terror threat ahead of Republic Day celebrations on January 26.

According to sources in the Intelligence Bureau (IB), banned Khalistan-backed groups and a Bangladesh-based extremist organization may be attempting to coordinate attacks through local criminal networks operating across North India.

Foreign Handlers Using Local Gangsters, Says IB

IB sources suggest that a number of gangsters from Punjab have been maintaining active links with radical handlers based overseas. These handlers, officials said, are attempting to exploit existing criminal networks to push their extremist agendas and compromise national security.

The gangs under scrutiny are reportedly active in Haryana, Delhi-NCR, Uttar Pradesh, and Rajasthan, and have been expanding their connections with anti-India elements abroad.

Security officials remain particularly cautious after the November 10, 2025 suicide car bombing near Red Fort, which resulted in the deaths of 15 people. Agencies fear that similar attempts could be made ahead of Republic Day.

Large-Scale Mock Drills Across Delhi

In preparation for the Republic Day Parade at Kartavya Path, Delhi Police conducted extensive mock drills in sensitive and high-footfall zones across the city.

Security rehearsals were held at:

  • Red Fort

  • ISBT Kashmere Gate

  • Chandni Chowk

  • Metro stations

  • Sadar Bazaar

  • Khari Baoli

These exercises aimed to test readiness, detect vulnerabilities, and familiarize response teams with rapid-action protocols. Authorities also used the drills to raise public awareness and encourage vigilance.

Heightened Security Expected Until January 26

With intelligence inputs indicating a possible coordinated effort involving foreign extremist groups and local criminal operatives, security agencies have tightened surveillance, boosted deployment in crowded areas, and increased checkpoints across Delhi-NCR.

Officials stress that the alert is precautionary but significant, given the symbolic importance of Republic Day celebrations and recent incidents.
