Rawalpindi, Pakistan | November 28, 2025 —
Pakistan’s Adiala Jail administration on Friday firmly rejected widespread social media rumors claiming that former Prime Minister Imran Khan had died in custody, confirming that the 72-year-old PTI chief remains “in stable health” and is under routine medical supervision. The false reports triggered intense unrest outside the high-security prison, where clashes between police and PTI supporters left 15 people injured.
The misinformation wave set off hours of nationwide protests, particularly in Rawalpindi and Islamabad, with PTI workers—led by Khan’s sister Aleema Khan—demanding immediate access to the jailed leader. Aleema has filed a petition before the Islamabad High Court, alleging a complete media blackout and comparing the restrictions to “Hitler-era repression.” She also raised concerns about Khan’s deteriorating condition, claiming his weight has dropped to 65 kilograms due to harsh prison circumstances, and called for an independent judicial probe.
Imran Khan, imprisoned since 2023, continues to face 21 cases, including the high-profile Al-Qadir Trust corruption scandal, charges he dismisses as politically motivated. Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi attributed the unrest to “foreign conspiracies,” while PTI leaders accused the Shehbaz Sharif government of weaponizing state agencies ahead of the 2026 elections.
The incident has drawn international attention, with UN Human Rights Chief Volker Türk urging transparency, access, and safeguards for Khan’s well-being. Observers warn that Pakistan’s ongoing political turmoil—paired with 40% inflation, IMF pressures, and a severely strained economy—could further destabilize the landscape as PTI retains a robust 45% approval rating, according to Gallup Pakistan.
The latest health-related panic echoes Khan’s dramatic May 2023 arrest, which sparked nationwide violence that left eight people dead, underscoring his enduring influence despite incarceration.
