New Delhi, India — April 4, 2026
A strong western disturbance has significantly altered weather patterns across North India, bringing widespread rain, thunderstorms, and snowfall across several regions, according to the India Meteorological Department.
The sudden shift has impacted both hilly and plains regions, with authorities warning of continued instability, including thunderstorms, hailstorms, and gusty winds through the coming week.
Rain, Snowfall, and Temperature Drop Across Regions
Under the influence of the active weather system, heavy snowfall was reported in higher altitudes of Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh, while plains including New Delhi, Punjab, Haryana, and Rajasthan witnessed rain accompanied by thunder and lightning.
In some areas, hailstorms and strong winds were also recorded. The sudden weather activity led to a drop of up to 5°C in temperatures, offering temporary relief from rising heat levels.
IMD Forecast: More Disturbances Ahead
The India Meteorological Department confirmed that one western disturbance has been active since April 2, while another is expected to impact the region starting April 7.
This means unsettled weather conditions—including rain, thunderstorms, and hail—are likely to persist across North India for several more days.
Jammu & Kashmir: Landslide and Flash Flood Risk
In Srinagar and surrounding areas, rainfall and snowfall intensified Friday afternoon. The maximum temperature dropped below normal levels.
Authorities have warned of potential landslides, flash floods, falling rocks, and waterlogging in vulnerable areas between April 4 and April 9 due to continued rainfall and storm activity.
Himachal Pradesh Issues Orange Alert
Himachal Pradesh witnessed fresh snowfall in high-altitude regions such as Rohtang, Lahaul, and Manali.
An orange alert has been issued for districts including Chamba, Kangra, Kullu, Mandi, and Shimla, warning of thunderstorms and hailstorms. Other regions remain under a yellow alert.
Disruptions have already been reported, including power outages due to damaged transformers and road closures in remote areas like Saluni and Pangi.
Rajasthan Weather Outlook
In Rajasthan, light to moderate rainfall was recorded in several districts over the past 24 hours, with Padampur in Sri Ganganagar receiving the highest rainfall.
The intensity of rain may decrease briefly on April 5–6, but another strong western disturbance on April 7 could bring renewed thunderstorms and showers across the state.
Punjab Incident Highlights Weather Risks
In a tragic incident in Hoshiarpur district of Punjab, lightning struck a group of children playing cricket, resulting in the death of one teenager and injuries to two others.
The state has also witnessed a temperature drop of over 5°C, with forecasts indicating winds of 50–60 km/h and possible hailstorms, prompting an orange alert.
