A U.S. military refueling aircraft crashed in western Iraq on Thursday amid ongoing military operations related to the escalating West Asia crisis, according to the United States Central Command.
Officials said the incident involved a KC-135 Stratotanker, a key aerial refueling aircraft used by the U.S. military to support long-range fighter and bomber operations. Rescue operations were launched immediately after the crash, and authorities are continuing to assess the situation.
Aircraft Part of Regional Military Operation
According to the U.S. military, the aircraft was participating in an operational mission connected to the ongoing conflict involving Iran.
Initial reports indicate that the crash was not caused by enemy fire or friendly-fire incidents. Military officials said the event involved two aircraft, both KC-135 refueling tankers.
One aircraft managed to land safely, while the second aircraft crashed in western Iraq, resulting in what the military described as a significant loss.
Investigation Underway
A U.S. defense official, speaking on condition of anonymity, confirmed that the second aircraft involved in the incident was also a KC-135 tanker.
In a statement, United States Central Command said further details would be released once more information becomes available. Officials also asked the public and media to allow time for authorities to inform the families of service members involved.
Fourth Aircraft Incident During Iran Operations
The crash marks the fourth publicly acknowledged U.S. aircraft incident during the ongoing military campaign connected to the Iran conflict.
Earlier this week, the U.S. military confirmed that three American fighter jets were accidentally shot down by allied forces in Kuwait.
Despite the incident, the six crew members aboard the fighter aircraft successfully ejected and were later rescued, with officials reporting they were in stable condition.
Casualties Reported in Ongoing Conflict
According to the Pentagon, the broader conflict involving Iran has so far resulted in seven U.S. military personnel deaths, while approximately 140 troops have been injured.
Defense officials added that eight of the injured service members remain in serious condition, highlighting the continuing risks faced by military personnel deployed in the region.
The situation across West Asia remains highly volatile, with military operations and diplomatic efforts continuing as international leaders monitor developments closely.
