Abu Dhabi, January 25, 2026
A trilateral peace dialogue between Russia, Ukraine, and the United States held in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has concluded without a major breakthrough, even as the conflict on the ground escalated with intensified Russian missile and drone attacks across Ukraine.
The talks, aimed at exploring pathways to end the war, took place amid one of the heaviest assault waves in recent months, worsening a humanitarian and energy crisis during freezing winter conditions.
🕊️ Peace Talks End Without Agreement
The two-day direct negotiations, held in Abu Dhabi, concluded on January 24, 2026, without a final agreement.
Delegations from Russia, Ukraine, and the United States (represented by envoys of the Trump administration) participated
Despite the lack of a deal, all three sides described the discussions as “constructive”
Talks focused on conditions for ending hostilities, ceasefire parameters, and security guarantees
This marks the first time in nearly four years that senior officials from Russia and Ukraine met face-to-face with U.S. mediation.
📅 Next Round of Talks Expected
U.S. officials confirmed that:
A second round of talks is tentatively scheduled for February 1, 2026
Abu Dhabi is expected to again host the negotiations
Diplomatic efforts will continue to narrow differences on key security and territorial issues
🚀 Missile and Drone Attacks Escalate
Even as talks were underway, Russia sharply intensified attacks on Ukrainian cities.
Ukrainian authorities reported over 396 missiles and drones launched by Saturday night alone
Kyiv and Kharkiv were among the primary targets
Strikes hit critical energy and civilian infrastructure
The timing of the attacks drew strong condemnation from Ukrainian officials.
❄️ Power Outages Trigger Humanitarian Crisis
The strikes caused severe damage to Ukraine’s energy grid, plunging millions into hardship during sub-zero temperatures.
More than 1.2 million households lost electricity and heating
In Kyiv, nearly half of all apartments are reportedly without heating
Emergency services are struggling to restore power amid continued attacks
Humanitarian agencies warn the situation could worsen if strikes continue.
🗣️ Diplomatic Reaction
Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha condemned the attacks, calling them “cruel” and “cowardly.”
He said Russia’s actions showed that President Vladimir Putin had attacked:
“Not only the Ukrainian people, but also the negotiating table itself”
Western officials echoed concerns that continued military escalation undermines diplomatic efforts.
🌍 A Fragile Diplomatic Moment
Despite the lack of immediate progress, diplomats say the resumption of direct talks represents a rare diplomatic opening in a conflict now entering its fourth year.
Observers caution, however, that any sustainable peace effort will depend on changes on the battlefield, energy security, and trust-building measures.
