U.S. President Donald Trump has canceled a planned visit by American envoys to Pakistan, a trip that was intended to facilitate indirect peace discussions with Iran in Islamabad.
Defending the decision, Trump said Iran’s latest proposal did not meet U.S. expectations, signaling a setback in ongoing diplomatic efforts to ease tensions in the Middle East. “The proposal was not what we hoped for,” Trump indicated, without disclosing specific details.
Iran Engages Regional Powers in Parallel Talks
Amid the diplomatic pause, Iran has intensified its regional outreach. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi held separate phone conversations with his counterparts in Egypt and Türkiye.
According to Iran’s state news agency, Araghchi and Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty discussed prospects for a ceasefire and broader regional developments. In a separate call, Araghchi spoke with Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan, focusing primarily on the ongoing diplomatic track between Iran and the United States.
Fidan also reportedly reached out to Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, underscoring the growing regional coordination around the issue.
Pakistan Reaffirms Role as Mediator
Pakistan has continued to position itself as a key intermediary in the diplomatic process. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif held a phone call with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, describing the exchange as “positive and constructive.”
Sharif expressed appreciation for Tehran’s continued engagement in mediation efforts, including recent diplomatic visits led by Araghchi. He reiterated Pakistan’s commitment to facilitating dialogue.
“With the support of friends and partners, Pakistan remains committed as a sincere and dedicated mediator,” Sharif said, emphasizing efforts to promote lasting peace and long-term regional stability.
Diplomatic Uncertainty Grows
The cancellation of the U.S. envoys’ visit introduces fresh uncertainty into an already fragile negotiation environment. While backchannel communications and regional diplomacy continue, Trump’s rejection of Iran’s proposal suggests that a breakthrough may not be imminent.
