Kyiv, Ukraine — April 18, 2026
The Russia-Ukraine War intensified sharply after Russia launched one of its largest coordinated aerial assaults of the year, firing hundreds of drones and missiles across multiple Ukrainian cities, according to Ukrainian officials.
At least 18 people were killed, including a child, and more than 100 others injured in the widespread attacks, which targeted civilian infrastructure and residential areas.
One of the Largest Strikes in 2026
- 659 drones
- 44 missiles
within a 24-hour period, marking one of the most intense aerial bombardments in recent months.
Major cities affected include Kyiv, Kharkiv, Odesa, Dnipro, and Zaporizhzhia.
Civilian Areas Hit, Casualties Rise
The attacks reportedly struck residential buildings and public facilities:
- In Odesa, a strike hit a national music academy hostel, injuring five students
- In Dnipro, at least three fatalities were confirmed
- In Zaporizhzhia, one person was killed
Emergency teams worked overnight to evacuate residents and provide medical aid.
Ukraine Condemns Attack
Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned the strikes, calling them evidence that Russia remains committed to military escalation.
Ukraine’s foreign minister Andrii Sybiha described the attack as “terrorist in nature,” accusing Russia of deliberately targeting civilian populations.
Zelenskyy urged the international community to maintain and strengthen sanctions against Russia, warning against any relaxation of pressure.
Ceasefire Collapse Raises Concerns
The escalation comes shortly after a 32-hour Easter ceasefire was declared, which quickly collapsed amid renewed hostilities.
The latest strikes have raised doubts about the viability of ongoing peace efforts, as both sides remain far apart on key issues.
Global Implications
The attack coincides with Zelenskyy’s diplomatic outreach in Italy, where he is seeking additional international support for Ukraine’s defense and security needs.
Analysts warn that the scale of the latest assault could:
- Intensify regional instability
- Complicate peace negotiations
- Increase pressure on global leaders to respond
