PM Modi Calls for Political Change in West Bengal at Massive Kolkata Rally
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday addressed a large public gathering at Brigade Parade Ground in Kolkata, sharply criticizing the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) government in West Bengal and asserting that the state is ready for political change.
Speaking to supporters, Modi said the enthusiasm of the crowd reflected the growing desire for transformation in the state.
He noted the historical significance of Brigade Parade Ground, saying the venue has often symbolized the voice of Bengal during pivotal moments in the country’s history.
“Whenever Bengal has shown direction to the nation, the Brigade Ground has become the voice of the people,” Modi said, referring to its role during India’s independence movement.
‘People of Bengal Want Change,’ Says Prime Minister
During his speech, the prime minister suggested that public sentiment in West Bengal is shifting.
He said calls for change are now visible “on the walls and in the hearts of the people,” adding that many citizens are demanding a new political alternative in the state.
The rally was part of a broader political outreach effort by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) ahead of upcoming political contests in the region.
PM Modi Criticizes TMC Government
Targeting the ruling party, Modi accused the state government of attempting to obstruct the rally.
He claimed authorities had taken steps such as restricting traffic movement, closing bridges, and removing party flags and posters in an attempt to limit participation.
Despite those challenges, he said the large turnout demonstrated strong public support for change.
References to Bengal’s Cultural Icons
During his address, the prime minister also invoked several prominent figures from Bengal’s cultural and intellectual history, including Ramakrishna Paramahansa, Swami Vivekananda, Subhas Chandra Bose, Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay, Rabindranath Tagore, Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar, Khudiram Bose, and Syama Prasad Mukherjee.
He said the vision of these leaders represented the foundation for what he described as a “new Bengal” focused on development and governance reforms.
Allegations Over Welfare Scheme Implementation
The prime minister also alleged that several central government welfare programs have not been fully implemented in West Bengal.
He cited initiatives such as:
PM Surya Ghar Free Electricity Scheme
Ayushman Bharat health insurance program
According to Modi, many beneficiaries in the state are unable to access these schemes due to administrative barriers.
Focus on Development and Infrastructure
Alongside the political messaging, Modi announced and inaugurated a series of development initiatives worth approximately ₹18,680 crore.
These projects include investments in:
Road infrastructure
Railway modernization
Port and maritime logistics
The prime minister said these initiatives would strengthen connectivity across West Bengal and eastern India, boost trade and industry, and improve economic opportunities for residents.
Railway Modernization and Station Redevelopment
As part of the development push, the prime minister flagged off the Purulia–Anand Vihar Terminal Express and inaugurated six redeveloped railway stations under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme.
The program aims to modernize railway infrastructure and improve passenger facilities across the country.
Port and Water Transport Expansion
Modi also emphasized the importance of port infrastructure and inland waterways for economic growth in eastern India.
He highlighted ongoing modernization at the Haldia Dock Complex, which is expected to enhance cargo handling capacity and support regional trade.
Outlook for Eastern India Development
Concluding his address, Modi said eastern India has long been an important economic and cultural hub but had not received adequate infrastructure investment in past decades.
He said improved connectivity, modern transport networks, and upgraded ports would help unlock the region’s economic potential.
“Our commitment is that Bengal regains its historic pride and becomes a developed and prosperous state,” the prime minister said.
