New Delhi — : Massive floods triggered by early monsoon rains have pushed the northeastern region of India into a state of emergency. With rivers like the Brahmaputra and Barak breaching danger levels, Assam and neighboring states are witnessing large-scale devastation. The death toll has climbed to 43 while more than 7 lakh people across Assam, Sikkim, Manipur, Mizoram, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, and Tripura are battling flood fury. The Meteorological Department has issued a yellow alert for 11 districts of Assam, warning of further rain and thunderstorms.
Assam Faces Severe Flooding Across 21 Districts
Assam remains the worst-hit with 21 districts submerged and over 6.32 lakh people impacted. Road, rail, and ferry services are paralyzed. Relief camps are operating at full capacity as 31,212 people take shelter in 165 camps across the state. Authorities are distributing food packets and water bottles amid ongoing rescue operations.
Sikkim Landslide Evacuations and Search for Missing Soldiers
Sikkim’s situation remains grim with ongoing landslides and blocked access routes. 1,700 people have been rescued so far. The Indian Air Force airlifted 34 stranded individuals from Chhaten using MI-17 helicopters. The army is searching for six missing soldiers from a military camp hit by a landslide in Lachen, while NDRF teams continue to hunt for eight others swept away in the raging Teesta river.
Manipur Floods Impact Over 1.64 Lakh
Floodwaters have affected 1.64 lakh people in Manipur, damaging 35,143 houses. Authorities have evacuated nearly 3,917 individuals and set up 77 relief camps. Heavy rainfall continues to complicate rescue and relief efforts.
Meghalaya, Mizoram Reeling Under Rain Havoc
Meghalaya reported six deaths and ongoing search efforts for missing tourists from Madhya Pradesh. The body of Raja Raghuvanshi was recovered from a ravine in Sohra, while his wife Sonam remains missing. Mizoram is reeling under landslides—552 incidents have occurred in just 10 days, damaging 152 houses and killing five people. Schools remain closed in 10 districts.
Bihar: Lightning and Hail Kill Seven
Heavy rain and hailstorm in Bihar’s Siwan district led to seven deaths. Villages like Barharia, Basantpur, and Lakdi Nabiganj suffered property damage, uprooted trees, and collapsed homes.
PM Modi Takes Stock, Promises Relief Support
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has spoken to the Chief Ministers of Assam and Sikkim and the Governor of Manipur to assess the ground situation. He assured full central support for rescue, relief, and rehabilitation efforts. The flood and landslide death toll stands at 17 in Assam, 11 in Arunachal, 6 in Meghalaya, 5 in Mizoram, 3 in Sikkim, and 1 in Tripura, highlighting the region’s vulnerability during early monsoon surges.
