New Delhi, India — April 9, 2026
Unseasonal weather conditions continue to impact large parts of North India, with snowfall in hill states and rain, thunderstorms, and hailstorms affecting the plains. The India Meteorological Department has issued alerts warning of continued adverse weather across several regions on Thursday.
Snowfall in Jammu & Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh
Fresh snowfall was reported in parts of Jammu and Kashmir, including Nathatop and Kathua, while Himachal Pradesh witnessed winter-like conditions in April. Snowfall was recorded near Shikari Devi and the Rohtang Tunnel, significantly lowering temperatures.
The adverse conditions led to disruptions on key routes, with the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway reopening only after being closed for two days.
Vaishno Devi Yatra Temporarily Halted
The ongoing pilgrimage to Vaishno Devi Temple was briefly suspended after reports of falling debris near Himkoti. The route from Ardhkuwari to the Bhawan was affected, prompting authorities to pause movement for safety.
Heavy Snow Covers Uttarakhand Shrines
In Uttarakhand, a thick blanket of snow has covered major pilgrimage routes from Badrinath to Auli. Snowfall continues in Kedarnath, while Gangotri and Yamunotri shrines remain snowbound.
These conditions have slowed down preparations for the upcoming Char Dham Yatra season, raising logistical concerns.
Rain, Storms, and Hail in Plains
Several states including Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Bihar, Jharkhand, and Madhya Pradesh are under alert for thunderstorms and hail.
Wind speeds may reach up to 70 km/h in some areas, posing risks to trees, power lines, and infrastructure. The weather shift has brought a noticeable drop in temperatures, offering temporary relief from early summer heat.
More Weather Disruptions Likely
The IMD has warned that unstable weather conditions may persist over the next few days. Authorities have advised residents and travelers to remain cautious, especially in vulnerable regions prone to landslides and strong winds.
