TEHRAN, Feb. 23, 2026 —
Anti-government protests continued for a second consecutive day at major universities in Iran, with students gathering in Tehran and Mashhad despite heightened security on campuses.
According to student groups and human rights organizations, demonstrations were reported at at least seven universities. Students chanted slogans and held gatherings to commemorate those killed during nationwide protests in January.
Institutions including the University of Tehran of Art and Iran University of Science and Technology saw visible student participation. Many protesters wore black clothing as a mark of tribute to those who lost their lives in earlier unrest.
Crackdown After January Protests
The renewed demonstrations follow a major security crackdown in January, when nationwide protests were forcefully dispersed. Rights organizations claimed thousands were killed and around 40,000 people were arrested. Iranian authorities stated that more than 3,000 deaths occurred and blamed foreign-backed elements, including Israel- and U.S.-supported groups, for instigating the unrest.
During those protests, demonstrators had called for the end of rule under Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.
Government Response
While no formal statement has been issued regarding the latest protests, state media reported tensions on campuses. A Tehran University official, Hossein Goldansaz, urged students to avoid “radical slogans” and violence. Security presence around universities has been increased.
Rising Tensions with the United States
The protests come as diplomatic engagement between Iran and the United States resumes over Tehran’s nuclear program. Talks mediated by Oman are expected to restart in Switzerland.
Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has said a resolution remains possible but emphasized that Iran will not relinquish its right to uranium enrichment. Meanwhile, U.S. military presence in the region has reportedly expanded, adding to the tense atmosphere.
