New Delhi, India — April 29, 2026

A fresh western disturbance has begun impacting large parts of India, bringing widespread rainfall, thunderstorms, and strong winds that have provided significant relief from the recent heatwave across northern, central, and eastern regions.

According to the India Meteorological Department, wind speeds ranging from 31 to 68 mph (50–110 km/h) were recorded at isolated locations over the past 24 hours, accompanied by lightning and light to moderate rainfall.

🌦️ Relief From Intense Heatwave

After several days of extreme heat and scorching conditions, Tuesday brought noticeable relief for residents across northwest, central, and eastern India. Cloud cover, gusty winds, and scattered showers led to a temperature drop of 3.6–7.2°F (2–4°C) in many regions.

The IMD forecasts that the weather will remain unstable over the next four to five days, with continued chances of rain and strong winds, helping sustain relief from extreme heat conditions.

🌩️ Regions Affected by Rain and Strong Winds

Over the past 24 hours, weather activity has been recorded across multiple regions, including:

  • Uttarakhand, Punjab, Haryana, and Chandigarh
  • West Uttar Pradesh and East Madhya Pradesh
  • Chhattisgarh, Odisha, and Gangetic West Bengal
  • Northeastern states and parts of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal

Heavy rainfall was reported in states such as Tripura and Meghalaya, while thunderstorms and gusty winds impacted several other areas.

In addition, strong winds were observed across regions including Jammu & Kashmir, Ladakh, Arunachal Pradesh, Vidarbha, Konkan & Goa, central Maharashtra, Marathwada, and Gujarat. Hailstorms were also reported in isolated parts of West Bengal, Madhya Pradesh, and Karnataka.

🌧️ Disruptions and Local Impact

Heavy rainfall in Mizoram led authorities to suspend classes in Aizawl as a precautionary measure. Localized disruptions were reported in some areas due to strong winds and lightning activity.

🏔️ Tourist Surge in Hill Stations

Rainfall in Himachal Pradesh, including popular destinations like
Shimla, has brought welcome relief from rising temperatures. The cooler weather has triggered a surge in tourist arrivals, as people from the northern plains head to hill stations to escape the heat.

Travel operators report increased bookings, with many visitors seeking short-term getaways amid fluctuating weather conditions.

🔄 Outlook: More Weather Fluctuations Ahead

Meteorologists indicate that the influence of the western disturbance will persist over the coming days, keeping weather patterns dynamic. Intermittent rainfall, cloud cover, and gusty winds are expected to continue, preventing a rapid return of extreme heat in the immediate term.

However, localized variations are likely, and residents are advised to stay updated with official forecasts and alerts.
