France Breaks Through After Patient First Half
France controlled possession throughout the opening half and created several promising opportunities but struggled to break through Sweden’s disciplined defensive setup.
The breakthrough finally came when Mbappé produced a moment of individual brilliance inside the penalty area, beating defenders with quick footwork before firing an unstoppable shot into the net to give France a deserved lead.

France took complete control shortly after halftime.
Michael Olise delivered an excellent pass to Bradley Barcola, who calmly finished to double France’s advantage.
Only minutes later, Olise again provided the decisive assist, finding Mbappé inside the box. The French captain made no mistake, scoring his second goal of the night to put the result beyond doubt.
The victory continued France’s impressive tournament form as Didier Deschamps’ side looks to make another deep World Cup run.
Didier Deschamps Praises Team Performance
Following the victory, France head coach Didier Deschamps praised his players for maintaining their composure and taking control after halftime.
“We are proud of our performance, and this victory is very special for us. The Round of 32 showed that no match in this tournament is easy. We could have finished some of our chances better in the first half, but overall the team produced an excellent performance and fully deserved the win,” Deschamps said.
France Sets Up Round of 16 Clash With Paraguay
France has now reached the FIFA World Cup Round of 16 for the seventh time, having previously advanced to this stage in 1986, 1998, 2006, 2014, 2018, and 2022.
The French national team has also qualified for the knockout stage in four consecutive World Cups, a feat surpassed only by Brazil.
France will next face Paraguay on July 5 in Philadelphia, with Deschamps’ side aiming to continue its pursuit of a third consecutive FIFA World Cup final appearance.
The France manager urged his players to remain focused despite the convincing victory.
“Our next match comes in four days, and our attention is already turning toward that challenge. We’ll enjoy today’s win, but we won’t look too far ahead. Paraguay is a strong and resilient South American team with many talented players. They deserve to be here, so we’ll need the same level of concentration and determination in the next match.”
With Mbappé in outstanding form and France playing some of the tournament’s most attacking football, the 2018 world champions remain among the leading contenders for the FIFA World Cup 2026 title.
