Ronald Koeman Resigns After Netherlands’ FIFA World Cup 2026 Exit
Ronald Koeman resigns as head coach of the Netherlands national football team following the Dutch side’s elimination from the FIFA World Cup 2026, bringing an end to his second spell in charge of the Oranje.
The announcement came shortly after the Netherlands suffered a defeat to Morocco in the Round of 32, ending the team’s World Cup campaign far earlier than expected. The loss marked a disappointing conclusion to a tournament in which the Dutch had hoped to mount a deep title challenge.
Koeman confirmed his decision in a message posted on Instagram, saying the early World Cup exit fell well short of the team’s ambitions.
“I have decided to end my tenure as head coach of the Dutch national team. We all dreamed of a World Cup where we would make history. We were unable to achieve that. No one is more disappointed than I am. As national coach, that responsibility is yours, and I have always felt it and always will,” Koeman wrote.
The 63-year-old also reflected on his personal priorities, emphasizing that life extends beyond football.
“Over the past few years, I have once again realized that there are things more important than football. Football has been my life, but health is priceless,” he added.
Second Spell Ends After Major Tournaments
Koeman first took charge of the Netherlands in early 2018 and remained in the role until mid-2020. During that period, he guided the Dutch to the 2019 UEFA Nations League final, restoring confidence in the national team after a difficult phase.

He returned as head coach at the beginning of 2023 following the FIFA World Cup in Qatar, where the Netherlands reached the quarterfinals.
Across his second tenure, Koeman led the Oranje to qualification for three major tournaments:
- UEFA Euro 2021
- UEFA Euro 2024
- FIFA World Cup 2026
The Netherlands also reached the semifinals of UEFA Euro 2024 under his leadership.
Overall, Koeman managed the Dutch national team in 64 official international matches, making him one of the country’s most experienced national team coaches.
Dutch Football Association Confirms Departure
The Royal Dutch Football Association (KNVB) confirmed that Koeman had informed the federation that he would not extend his contract after its expiration, officially ending his second stint with the national team.
Koeman acknowledged that leaving the role was an emotional decision after working closely with the coaching staff and players over the past several years.
“It was not an easy decision after working so closely and passionately with this coaching staff and group of players for such a long time. I am grateful and sincerely appreciate the dedication of everyone associated with the Oranje during both of my periods as head coach,” he said.
Looking Ahead to Family Life
Reflecting on the premature end of the World Cup campaign, Koeman admitted the disappointment would remain but said he would ultimately remember the positive experiences shared with the team.
“It is extremely disappointing that our World Cup campaign ended so early. But when I look back, I will mainly remember the outstanding cooperation and the many wonderful moments we shared together. I want to thank everyone who contributed. I have decided that this is the right time to spend more time with my wife, children, and grandchildren. At this point in my life, it feels like the right and most natural decision.”
The KNVB is expected to begin the search for Koeman’s successor as the Netherlands starts preparations for its next international cycle.
