Hindu Day of Advocacy Brings Hindu Americans to Capitol Hill to Highlight Community Concerns
Hindu Day of Advocacy brought nearly 160 Hindu Americans from 14 U.S. states to Capitol Hill, where they met lawmakers to discuss issues including anti-Hindu hate, religious freedom, civic participation, and political representation. The annual event, organized by the Coalition of Hindus of North America (CoHNA), marked its fifth edition with a full day of meetings, policy discussions, and community engagement.
According to organizers, participants held more than 50 meetings with members of the U.S. Senate and the House of Representatives, while visiting approximately 170 congressional offices to raise awareness about issues affecting the Hindu American community and encourage greater participation in the democratic process.

Anti-Hindu Hate Among Key Issues Raised
According to CoHNA President Nikunj Trivedi, discussions with lawmakers focused on several issues, including:
- Rising anti-Hindu rhetoric.
- Attacks targeting Hindu temples.
- Online hate directed at Indian-American communities.
- Mischaracterization of Hindu Americans as agents of foreign governments.
- Religious discrimination.
- Equal representation in public life.
Trivedi said the delegation explained how members of the Hindu community sometimes face accusations or stereotyping when raising concerns about attacks on places of worship or discussing their religious identity.
He noted that participants urged lawmakers to recognize these challenges while ensuring equal protection for all religious communities.
Indian Embassy Highlights Strong Bilateral Relations
During a reception held alongside the event, Namgya C. Khampa, Deputy Chief of Mission at the Embassy of India in Washington, described the India-U.S. relationship as one of the world’s most significant strategic partnerships.
She said cooperation between India and the United States continues to deepen across multiple sectors and highlighted the role of the Indian diaspora in strengthening ties between the two democracies.
Khampa also referred to the recent meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Donald Trump in France, saying both leaders have outlined ambitious goals for expanding bilateral cooperation.
She noted that the Indian-origin community remains an important bridge between the two countries.
Growing Civic Engagement Within the Hindu American Community
Organizers said the event reflects increasing political participation among Hindu Americans.
According to Trivedi, the community has historically been less vocal in public policy discussions but is becoming more engaged with democratic institutions and legislative processes.
He said advocacy efforts aim to encourage greater civic participation while ensuring that community concerns are represented before policymakers.
Youth Summit Encourages Future Community Leaders
The event also featured a Youth Summit, where approximately 40 young Hindu Americans participated in leadership and civic engagement sessions.
CoHNA additionally launched a Leadership Incubator Program, designed to prepare the next generation of Hindu American community leaders by providing opportunities for mentorship, public service, and policy engagement.
Organizers said empowering younger generations remains a central objective of the organization’s long-term outreach strategy.
Interfaith Leaders Express Solidarity
Representatives from multiple faith communities also attended the event and expressed solidarity with the Hindu American community.
According to organizers, interfaith participants condemned attacks on Hindu temples and emphasized the importance of protecting religious freedom and promoting mutual respect among all communities.
The event highlighted cooperation across religious groups in addressing hate-based incidents and encouraging inclusive dialogue.
Students Advocate for Greater Campus Engagement
A panel of students from Rutgers University discussed efforts to strengthen Hindu student engagement on university campuses.
The students said they have been organizing educational events, engaging with university administrators, and encouraging Hindu students to become more active in civic and democratic activities.
They also emphasized the importance of ensuring that Hindu identity and traditions are represented accurately in academic and public discussions.
Part of a Broader Community Outreach Initiative
Organizers described the annual event as part of a broader effort by Hindu American organizations to build sustained engagement with elected officials and public institutions.
The initiative seeks to strengthen communication between policymakers and the Hindu American community while encouraging broader participation in American civic life.
Over the past decade, Indian Americans have become one of the fastest-growing and increasingly active immigrant communities in the United States, expanding their presence across business, education, public service, technology, healthcare, and community leadership.
Held During America’s 250th Anniversary Celebrations
This year’s Hindu Day of Advocacy coincided with celebrations marking the 250th anniversary of the United States.
Organizers said the timing underscored the contributions of Hindu Americans to the nation’s economic growth, educational excellence, entrepreneurship, innovation, healthcare, and public life.
They also highlighted the community’s growing role in strengthening strategic, economic, cultural, and people-to-people ties between India and the United States.
Outlook
The fifth Hindu Day of Advocacy demonstrated the increasing civic engagement of the Hindu American community as participants met lawmakers to discuss religious freedom, anti-Hindu hate, political representation, and democratic participation. By expanding dialogue with Congress and encouraging youth leadership, organizers aim to strengthen the community’s voice in public policy while contributing to broader conversations on religious inclusion and civic engagement in the United States.
As India-U.S. relations continue to deepen across strategic and economic sectors, Hindu American organizations are expected to play an increasingly prominent role in fostering stronger people-to-people connections and greater participation in American democratic institutions.
