New Delhi, May 27, 2026

Delhi NCR Weather Update: Residents across Delhi-NCR continue to battle intense heatwave conditions as temperatures remain dangerously high and hot winds make outdoor conditions extremely uncomfortable. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for severe heat on Wednesday, warning that the scorching conditions are likely to persist for another day before weather changes begin from May 28.

According to the IMD, Delhi is expected to witness mostly clear skies with maximum temperatures ranging between 44°C and 46°C, while minimum temperatures are expected to remain between 27°C and 29°C. Strong surface winds with speeds of 20 to 30 kmph are also likely, with occasional gusts reaching 40 kmph.

The weather department has further predicted that a fresh western disturbance may start affecting Northwest India from May 28 onward, bringing rainfall, thunderstorms, dust storms, and a noticeable drop in temperatures across the region.

Heatwave Conditions Continue to Trouble Delhi-NCR

Delhi and neighboring NCR cities have been experiencing prolonged heatwave conditions for several days, making daytime travel and outdoor work increasingly difficult.

On Tuesday, the national capital recorded a maximum temperature of 43.5°C, while the minimum temperature settled at 26.8°C. This marked the 11th consecutive day when Delhi’s temperature remained above 40 degrees Celsius.

Several parts of Delhi and surrounding NCR regions recorded temperatures above 44°C during peak afternoon hours. Residents continued facing severe discomfort due to blazing sunlight and hot winds sweeping through the region.

Humidity levels also remained significant, with maximum humidity touching 49% and minimum humidity recorded at 22%, adding to the discomfort.

Why Is Delhi Experiencing Such Extreme Heat?

Meteorologists attribute the ongoing severe heat to the annual Nautapa period, considered one of the hottest phases of the Indian summer season.

During Nautapa, direct solar radiation over the northern plains leads to rapid temperature increases. Dry atmospheric conditions and the absence of significant weather systems have further intensified heatwave conditions across North India.

The IMD stated that temperatures are unlikely to witness major relief until the western disturbance becomes active later this week.

Health experts have also warned that prolonged exposure to such extreme temperatures may increase the risk of:

  • Heatstroke
  • Dehydration
  • Fatigue
  • Low blood pressure
  • Respiratory discomfort

Authorities have advised people to avoid outdoor activities during afternoon hours and remain hydrated.

Rain and Thunderstorm Relief Expected From May 28

The India Meteorological Department has predicted gradual weather changes beginning May 28 and May 29.

According to forecasts, Delhi-NCR may witness:

  • Light rainfall
  • Partly cloudy skies
  • Thunderstorms
  • Dust storms
  • Strong winds between 40-50 kmph
  • Wind gusts occasionally reaching 60 kmph

The IMD has issued a yellow alert for rainfall and thunderstorms during this period.

Weather experts believe the incoming western disturbance could significantly reduce temperatures across Delhi-NCR. Between May 30 and May 31, maximum temperatures are expected to decline to around 34°C to 37°C, bringing temporary relief from the ongoing heatwave.

Cloudy conditions and intermittent light rain are also likely to continue during this period.

Air Quality Remains in Poor Category

Alongside the extreme heat, air quality across Delhi-NCR continues to remain a major concern.

On Tuesday, Delhi recorded an Air Quality Index (AQI) of 252, which falls under the “Poor” category.

Among NCR cities:

  • Greater Noida recorded the worst AQI at 332 (“Very Poor”)
  • Ghaziabad recorded AQI of 297
  • Noida recorded AQI of 244
  • Faridabad recorded AQI of 213
  • Gurugram remained relatively cleaner with AQI at 180 (“Moderate”)

Experts believe local weather conditions, dust accumulation, vehicle emissions, and stagnant atmospheric conditions are contributing to deteriorating air quality levels.

Impact of Heatwave on Daily Life

The ongoing heatwave has significantly disrupted daily life across Delhi-NCR.

Roads in many areas remained relatively deserted during afternoon hours as residents avoided stepping outdoors. Demand for electricity and cooling appliances also surged sharply due to continuous use of air conditioners and coolers.

Hospitals and health centers have reported rising cases of dehydration and heat-related illnesses, particularly among elderly people, children, and outdoor workers.

Officials have advised residents to:

  • Drink plenty of water
  • Avoid direct sunlight
  • Wear light cotton clothes
  • Avoid strenuous outdoor activity during peak heat hours
  • Use umbrellas or protective coverings outdoors

Conclusion

Delhi-NCR continues to face intense heatwave conditions as temperatures hover between 44°C and 46°C under clear skies and strong hot winds. While the IMD has warned that severe heat will continue on Wednesday, weather conditions are expected to improve gradually from May 28 due to a western disturbance.

Rainfall, thunderstorms, and strong winds are likely to bring temporary relief and reduce temperatures by several degrees across the region over the coming days.
