NEW DELHI, India — May 14, 2026

India’s air cargo sector achieved a historic milestone in the financial year 2024–25, handling a record 3.72 million metric tons of freight as the country continued strengthening its position in global logistics and international trade.

The sharp rise highlights the rapid expansion of India’s aviation-linked logistics network and reflects sustained growth in cargo movement over the past decade.

According to official figures, air cargo volumes have increased by nearly 47% since 2014–15, when the country handled approximately 2.53 million metric tons of freight.

Strong Growth Continues in Current Fiscal Year

The momentum has continued into the current financial year, with cargo handling volumes reaching 2.98 million metric tons by December 2025 in FY 2025–26.

Industry analysts described the increase as a significant achievement for India’s logistics and aviation sectors, driven by rising international trade activity, e-commerce growth, and infrastructure modernization.

The expansion has also strengthened India’s role as an emerging logistics hub in Asia.

Cargo Operations Active at 74 Airports

At present, cargo operations are being conducted across 74 airports in India, with the government and the Airports Authority of India investing heavily in infrastructure upgrades and storage capacity expansion.

Authorities are also developing advanced cargo handling facilities at the upcoming Noida International Airport and Navi Mumbai International Airport, both of which are expected to become major logistics gateways.

Government Push to Boost International Trade

To support further expansion, the government has introduced a reimbursement policy covering the cost of customs personnel deployment at 27 airports between 2024–25 and 2026–27.

The initiative includes support for 15 dedicated cargo terminals aimed at improving international trade access for smaller cities and regional markets.

Officials say the move will help reduce logistical bottlenecks, improve export efficiency, and encourage greater participation from businesses located outside major metropolitan centers.

India Emerging as Major Global Logistics Player

Experts believe India’s rapidly growing cargo network is becoming a key pillar of the country’s broader economic and trade ambitions.

With rising investment in airport infrastructure, multimodal connectivity, and digital logistics systems, India is increasingly positioning itself as a major global player in freight transportation and supply chain operations.

The sector’s continued growth is also expected to generate employment opportunities while supporting manufacturing, exports, and cross-border commerce in the coming years.
