Mumbai, India — April 29, 2026
India’s benchmark stock indices surged sharply in early Wednesday trading, driven by improving global sentiment after fresh signals of easing geopolitical tensions between Iran and the United States.
The BSE Sensex climbed more than 500 points to breach the 77,400 mark, while the Nifty 50 rose over 150 points to cross 24,100, reflecting strong investor optimism.
Strong Opening on Global Cues
Markets opened on a firm note following reports that Iran is considering a proposal to halt military operations near the Strait of Hormuz, a key global oil transit route. The development has raised hopes of de-escalation in West Asia, easing concerns about supply disruptions and energy price volatility.
Investor sentiment improved significantly as geopolitical risks appeared to recede, triggering broad-based buying across sectors.
Broad-Based Market Rally
The rally was not limited to large-cap stocks. Broader markets also posted solid gains, indicating strong participation from investors:
- The Nifty Smallcap 100 index rose around 0.7%
- The Nifty Midcap 100 index advanced approximately 0.6%
This suggests a healthy market trend with momentum extending beyond heavyweight stocks.
Top Gainers Lead the Charge
Among the top performers:
- Shares of Eternal Ltd. (parent company of Zomato and Blinkit) surged over 4% following strong quarterly earnings
- Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone gained up to 2%
- Eicher Motors also climbed nearly 2%
- Other gainers included Maruti Suzuki, Bharat Electronics Limited, Infosys, and Reliance Industries, all rising up to 3%
Select Stocks Under Pressure
Despite the broader rally, some stocks faced mild declines:
- Asian Paints
- ICICI Bank
- Bajaj Finserv
- Axis Bank
Caution Amid Optimism
While markets rallied strongly, analysts remain cautious. Rising crude oil prices and continued foreign institutional investor (FII) selling could pose near-term risks.
Experts note that sustained stability in global geopolitics and energy markets will be key to maintaining the current bullish momentum.
