Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday inaugurated the Delhi-Dehradun Economic Corridor from Dehradun, marking a major boost to infrastructure and regional connectivity in northern India.
During the same visit, the Prime Minister also unveiled the country’s first Variable Speed Pumped Storage Plant with a capacity of 1,000 megawatts in Tehri, a significant step toward strengthening India’s renewable energy infrastructure.
Transforming Connectivity and Travel Time
The Delhi-Dehradun Economic Corridor, spanning approximately 213 kilometers, has been developed at a cost of over ₹12,000 crore and passes through Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, and Uttarakhand.
The project is expected to reduce travel time between Delhi and Dehradun from over six hours to about 2.5 hours, offering faster, safer, and more efficient connectivity.

- 10 interchanges
- 3 railway overbridges
- 4 major bridges
- 12 roadside public facilities
Officials say the corridor will significantly improve mobility for both passengers and freight.
Focus on Sustainability and Wildlife Protection
A major highlight of the project is its emphasis on environmental sustainability.
The corridor includes a 12-kilometer-long elevated wildlife corridor, one of the longest in Asia, designed to minimize human-wildlife conflict and protect natural habitats.

Boost to Clean Energy: Tehri Pumped Storage Plant
Alongside the highway project, Prime Minister Modi inaugurated the 1,000 MW Variable Speed Pumped Storage Plant in Tehri, aimed at enhancing grid stability and supporting renewable energy integration.
The facility is expected to:
