Siliguri, West Bengal, India — April 13, 2026
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday said the political mood in West Bengal is “clearly in favor” of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), following his visit to Siliguri where he interacted with party workers and addressed a large public gathering.
The remarks come amid intensifying political activity in the state, with the BJP aiming to expand its footprint in a region long dominated by the Trinamool Congress (TMC).
High Turnout and Enthusiasm at Rally
Large crowds gathered at the Siliguri rally on Sunday, with supporters chanting slogans and waving BJP flags. According to party officials, turnout reflected growing grassroots support for the BJP in the state.
In a post on X, Modi shared images from his interaction with party workers, praising their efforts and calling their grassroots work “truly inspiring.”
Interaction With Party Workers
During his meeting with BJP workers, the prime minister said he received feedback on local issues and governance challenges faced by residents under the current state administration.
“Interacting with hardworking BJP workers is always a pleasure. Their commitment at the grassroots level is inspiring,” Modi said, adding that conversations indicated increasing public support for the BJP’s development agenda.
Sharp Criticism of TMC Government
Modi also targeted the ruling Trinamool Congress and Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, accusing the state government of prioritizing appeasement politics over balanced development.
He alleged that budget allocations reflect skewed priorities, citing significant funding for madrasa education while claiming that North Bengal has received comparatively limited attention.
The prime minister further criticized the state leadership’s response to past natural disasters, referencing last year’s floods and landslides in North Bengal.
Allegations on Security and Governance
In his address, Modi accused certain TMC leaders of supporting elements linked to disruptive activities, including alleged threats to the strategically important Siliguri Corridor.
He also claimed that the state government has created obstacles in the implementation of central welfare schemes, impacting beneficiaries across West Bengal.
Political Implications
The visit underscores the BJP’s continued focus on West Bengal as a key political battleground. Analysts say such high-energy rallies and direct engagement with party workers are aimed at consolidating support ahead of future electoral contests.
The TMC has not yet issued a detailed response to the latest remarks.
