Massive Security Alert in Manipur as PM Modi Plans First Visit After Kuki-Meitei Clashes

0

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to reach Manipur from Mizoram on Saturday, marking his first visit to the state after the ethnic clashes between Kukis and Meiteis in May 2023. While no official announcement has been made so far, massive preparations are underway in Imphal and Churachandpur, with security arrangements scaled up across the entire state. A grand stage is being set up at the historic Kangla Fort in Imphal and the Peace Ground in Churachandpur, where Modi is likely to address the public.

Security has been intensified in every district with state and central forces maintaining strict vigil. At Kangla Fort, which spreads across 237 acres, State Disaster Management Force boats have been deployed to patrol the trenches, while sniffer dogs and advanced security equipment are being used to detect any suspicious items. Entry of tourists to Kangla Fort has been suspended until further notice.

Vigil has been stepped up in Sanjenthong, Minuthong, and Moirangkhom areas, with round-the-clock checking of vehicles and pedestrians. Senior security officials are conducting daily review meetings, and high alert orders have been issued throughout Manipur. A large contingent of central security personnel has also reached Churachandpur to coordinate with state forces.

Officials confirmed that three militants linked to banned insurgent groups have been arrested in the past 48 hours. A PREPAK cadre was arrested in Imphal West with a 9 mm pistol, a UNLF (Koireng) member was held in Bishnupur district, and a KCP (Taibangnangamba) militant was arrested in Imphal East. These arrests highlight the tense security environment ahead of PM Modi’s proposed visit.

With the Prime Minister’s likely arrival, Imphal, Churachandpur, and sensitive border districts remain under heavy security watch. Temporary checkpoints have been established by CRPF and state forces to monitor the movement of anti-social elements, ensuring that the visit proceeds without disruption.
