The Kerala Story 2 Controversy

Kochi, India — February 19, 2026

A petition has been filed in the Kerala High Court seeking cancellation of the censor certificate granted to the upcoming film The Kerala Story 2, triggering fresh controversy ahead of its theatrical release.

The plea was submitted by Sridev Namboodiri, a resident of Chittariparamba in Kannur district. The High Court has issued notices to the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) and the film’s producer Sunshine Pictures, directing them to respond. The matter is scheduled for further hearing on February 24.

What the Petition Seeks

The petitioner has requested that the court revoke the film’s certification, arguing that its content is objectionable and warrants judicial review before public screening. The court has not yet expressed any opinion on the merits of the claims and has only sought responses from relevant parties at this stage.

Why the Film Is Facing Controversy

The film, which features Aditi Bhatia, Ulka Gupta, and Aishwarya Ojha in lead roles, appears to revolve around three young women whose lives are portrayed as being affected by forced religious conversion. The storyline, as suggested in promotional material, touches on sensitive themes including interfaith relationships and coercion.

These themes have sparked intense debate on social media. Critics argue the film could promote divisive narratives, while supporters say it addresses issues they believe deserve public discussion.

Release Timeline

Despite the legal challenge, the film is currently scheduled for theatrical release on February 27, unless any court directive alters the timeline following the upcoming hearing.

Legal and Industry Context

Legal experts note that courts generally intervene in film certification matters only under specific circumstances, typically after reviewing whether regulatory procedures were properly followed or if the content violates applicable laws.

The case highlights the recurring tension between creative expression, regulatory oversight, and public sentiment in India’s film industry.
