Zelensky Speaks on Ukraine Helping U.S. and Gulf Nations Counter Iranian Drones

Kyiv, Ukraine — March 6, 2026

A new geopolitical development has emerged amid the intensifying conflict in the Middle East. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said that the United States and several Gulf nations have approached Ukraine for assistance in countering Iranian drone threats, highlighting the growing global implications of the regional conflict.

The statement comes as tensions continue to escalate in the Middle East, where missile and drone strikes between regional powers have heightened security concerns across the region.

Zelensky: Countries Seeking Ukraine’s Experience Against Iranian Drones

Speaking about the ongoing situation, President Zelensky said that several countries want to learn from Ukraine’s experience in defending against Iranian-made Shahed drones.

According to Zelensky, officials from the United States and several Middle Eastern nations have contacted Ukraine regarding possible cooperation. He said he recently held discussions with leaders from the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Bahrain, Jordan, and Kuwait on the issue.

Ukraine has faced thousands of drone attacks during the war with Russia, giving its military extensive operational experience in detecting and intercepting such threats.

Iranian Drones Increasingly Used in Regional Conflicts

Over the past several years, Russia has used Iranian-designed Shahed drones extensively in its war against Ukraine. Ukrainian officials say that these drones have become a major element of modern battlefield strategy.

In one recent attack, Russia reportedly launched more than 800 drones and decoy targets in a single night, forcing Ukrainian air defenses to respond on a massive scale.

Similar drone technologies are now appearing in the Middle East conflict, raising concerns among regional governments about potential air defense vulnerabilities.

Ukraine Open to Helping — But Security Comes First

President Zelensky emphasized that Ukraine would only provide assistance if it does not compromise its own national security or undermine ongoing diplomatic efforts related to the war with Russia.

He added that Ukraine is willing to help countries that support Ukraine’s security and its people.

Zelensky also indicated that the United States has requested Ukraine’s expertise in defending against drone attacks in the Middle East. According to him, Ukrainian specialists and equipment have been ordered to assist, although specific details were not publicly disclosed.

Ukraine’s Low-Cost Drone Defense Drawing Global Interest

After years of defending against drone attacks, Ukraine has developed relatively low-cost but effective counter-drone technologies.

Ukrainian engineers have created interceptor drones capable of identifying and destroying enemy drones at an estimated cost of around $1,000 per unit, significantly cheaper than traditional air defense systems.

This approach has drawn attention from several countries seeking more affordable methods to counter growing drone threats.

For example, in September last year, Poland reportedly placed advanced fighter jets such as F-35 Lightning II and F-16 Fighting Falcon on alert after detecting possible drone threats near its borders.

Ukraine’s rapidly expanding drone industry is now reaching a level where it could potentially export drone defense technologies internationally, analysts say.

Middle East Conflict Diverting Attention From Russia-Ukraine War

The new Middle East conflict has now entered its seventh day, intensifying global security concerns.

Zelensky noted that the crisis is beginning to shift international attention away from the four-year war between Russia and Ukraine, which remains the largest military conflict in Europe.

He said that ongoing tensions have also delayed a new round of peace talks between Russia and Ukraine, which were expected to take place with mediation from the United States.

Prisoner Exchange Between Russia and Ukraine Continues

Despite the challenges, diplomatic channels between Kyiv and Moscow have produced limited humanitarian outcomes.

With mediation from the United States, Russia and Ukraine recently exchanged approximately 200 prisoners each, according to officials.

Russian negotiator Vladimir Medinsky said that both sides plan to exchange up to 500 prisoners over two days.

Meanwhile, Ukrainian parliamentary foreign affairs committee chair Oleksandr Merezhko accused Russian President Vladimir Putin of prolonging negotiations in order to continue military operations while avoiding additional international sanctions.

Ukraine Regaining Territory in Recent Weeks

Ukrainian forces have reported some battlefield gains in recent weeks.

According to recent reports, Ukraine has reclaimed approximately 257 square kilometers of territory since the beginning of the year, pushing back Russian forces in certain frontline sectors.

While the broader conflict continues, analysts say Ukraine’s growing technological expertise — particularly in drone warfare — is increasingly shaping modern military strategy worldwide.
