The Office of the United States Trade Representative (USTR) has welcomed the final framework of the India–US trade agreement, stating that the deal will significantly expand market access for American farmers, manufacturers, and producers.
The response comes after India and the United States jointly announced that both sides have agreed on a framework for an interim, mutually beneficial trade agreement aimed at boosting bilateral commerce.
USTR Praises Trump’s Trade Strategy
In its statement, the USTR credited Donald Trump for advancing trade policies that expand American access to one of the world’s largest economies. The agency said the agreement will allow US farmers and producers to reach new markets in India while reducing long-standing trade barriers.
According to the USTR, India has committed to eliminating or reducing tariffs across a broad range of American industrial and agricultural products.
Wider Market Access for US Agricultural Products
The USTR highlighted that the trade agreement will benefit multiple US agricultural sectors. Products ranging from nuts and dried distillers grains (DDG) to sorghum, as well as fresh and processed fruits, are expected to gain expanded access to the Indian market.
In a separate statement, the agency said that India has also committed to addressing long-standing non-tariff barriers, increasing purchases of American goods and services, and facilitating imports of more than $500 billion worth of US products over time.
Jamieson Greer Welcomes New Opportunities
US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer praised the agreement, stating that President Trump’s deal-making efforts are opening doors for American workers, farmers, and entrepreneurs.
“Today’s announcement reflects the deepening relationship between the United States and India, as we create new opportunities for farmers and entrepreneurs in both countries,” Greer said.
India to Remove Tariff and Non-Tariff Barriers
The White House said in the joint India–US statement that both sides have agreed on a framework for reciprocal and mutually beneficial trade.
Greer added that under the agreement, tariffs on a wide range of US industrial and agricultural goods are being reduced, while India is removing tariff and non-tariff barriers to open its market of more than 1.4 billion consumers to American products.
He also thanked India’s Minister of Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal for his leadership and commitment toward achieving fair and balanced trade between the two countries.
