London/Brussels — November 29, 2025 :
The United Kingdom has deployed military personnel to multiple airports across Belgium following a sharp rise in drone incursions over sensitive European airspace. Announced by the UK Ministry of Defence (MoD) on November 29, the precautionary move aims to bolster counter-drone surveillance systems and strengthen joint air-security operations.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer authorized the deployment after consultations with NATO allies, amid intelligence alerts suggesting attempts to probe European air corridors. Drone-related security incidents across Belgium have surged by nearly 200% in 2025, with defense analysts warning that the patterns align with emerging hybrid warfare tactics used by hostile state and non-state actors.
Belgian authorities confirmed that no flights have been disrupted so far, but surveillance teams detected multiple unauthorized drones near high-traffic hubs over the past month. NATO officials say enhanced joint monitoring is critical as the alliance prepares for heightened winter security risks.
Aerospace security experts caution that drone incursions pose potential threats not only to civil aviation but also to military logistics and infrastructure. The UK’s deployment, they argue, signals deepening concern over Europe’s vulnerability to low-cost, remotely operated aerial systems capable of evading traditional radar.
Both nations have emphasized that the mission is defensive and temporary, with further steps to be decided after NATO’s upcoming threat assessment review.
