Trump Pauses ‘Project Freedom’ After Pakistan’s Appeal, US-Iran Talks Gain Momentum Amid Hormuz Tensions

US President Donald Trump temporarily halts Project Freedom while diplomatic talks with Iran continue amid tensions in the Strait of Hormuz.

Washington, DC | May 6, 2026

Donald Trump has announced a temporary suspension of “Project Freedom,” the US-led military mission launched to rescue commercial ships stranded near the strategically critical Strait of Hormuz amid rising tensions with Iran.

The US President shared the announcement on his social media platform, Truth Social, stating that the decision was taken following appeals from Pakistan and several other countries involved in diplomatic mediation efforts between Washington and Tehran.

However, Trump clarified that while the rescue and extraction operation has been paused, the naval blockade surrounding Iranian ports will continue “at full strength.”

Trump Says Diplomatic Progress Prompted Decision

According to Trump, recent negotiations with Iranian representatives have shown “substantial progress” toward what he described as a “complete and final agreement.”

The temporary halt to Project Freedom is reportedly intended to provide space for ongoing diplomatic discussions and increase the chances of securing a formal agreement between the United States and Iran.

In his statement, Trump claimed that the US military campaign against Iran had already achieved “major success,” adding that both sides are now closer to a possible settlement.

“The operation to secure shipping routes is paused for a short period to allow negotiations to reach completion,” Trump said in his social media post.

Pakistan Playing Key Mediation Role

Trump acknowledged Pakistan’s involvement in facilitating communication between the United States and Iran during the escalating crisis in the Gulf region.

According to officials familiar with the situation, Pakistan and several regional allies have urged restraint amid concerns that prolonged military action could disrupt global oil supplies and international trade routes.

The diplomatic outreach reportedly intensified after fears grew over instability around the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most critical maritime energy corridors.

What Was ‘Project Freedom’?

Trump had announced Project Freedom earlier this week following appeals from multiple countries seeking assistance for commercial vessels trapped in the region.

The operation was launched by United States Central Command (CENTCOM) to secure shipping lanes and escort stranded merchant ships safely through the Gulf waters.

The mission involved a major US military deployment, including:

  • Missile-defense warships
  • More than 100 aircraft and drones
  • Around 15,000 military personnel
  • Maritime surveillance systems and naval escort operations

The operation aimed to stabilize international shipping activity and prevent further disruptions to global commerce.

Naval Blockade Around Iran to Continue

Despite suspending the rescue mission, Trump emphasized that the US naval pressure campaign against Iran remains active.

Military analysts believe the continued blockade is intended to maintain leverage during negotiations while limiting Iran’s strategic movement in the region.

The situation in the Gulf continues to be closely monitored by international markets, energy companies, and global governments due to the Strait of Hormuz’s importance to worldwide oil transportation.

Why the Strait of Hormuz Matters

The Strait of Hormuz is considered one of the world’s most strategically vital waterways, connecting the Persian Gulf to global shipping routes. A significant percentage of global crude oil exports pass through the narrow maritime corridor every day.

Any disruption in the region can directly impact:

  • Global oil prices
  • Energy supplies
  • International shipping
  • Financial markets
  • Middle East geopolitical stability

Experts warn that prolonged uncertainty in the region could continue affecting global trade and energy security.
