The legal battle surrounding Thalapathy Vijay’s upcoming film ‘Jana Nayagan’ has reached a decisive stage, with the Madras High Court’s division bench set to pronounce its final verdict on January 27, 2026 (Tuesday). The ruling is expected to determine the film’s certification status and future theatrical release.
The case pertains to a dispute over the censor certificate issued by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), which had raised objections to certain portions of the film.
Reason Behind the Censor Dispute
According to court records, the CBFC objected to specific political dialogues, potential religious sensitivities, and the portrayal of the armed forces in Jana Nayagan. Citing these concerns, the certification board referred the film to its Revising Committee, delaying the issuance of a final certificate.
The decision triggered legal action from the film’s makers, who challenged the CBFC’s move.
Earlier Court Orders and Stay
On January 9, a single judge of the Madras High Court, Justice P.T. Asha, directed the CBFC to immediately grant a U/A 16+ certificate to the film. However, the CBFC filed an appeal against this order on the same day.
Subsequently, a division bench headed by Chief Justice Manindra Mohan Shrivastava, along with Justice G. Arul Murugan, stayed the single judge’s directive, allowing the CBFC’s appeal to be heard in detail.
Final Hearing and Reserved Judgment
The division bench heard extensive arguments from both sides on January 20, following which the court reserved its judgment. It has now been confirmed that the final verdict will be delivered on January 27, a decision that will have significant implications for the film’s release.
Impact on Film’s Release
Due to the ongoing censor controversy, Jana Nayagan was unable to release on its originally scheduled date of January 9, 2026, coinciding with the Pongal festival. The film’s fate—including whether it receives certification without further cuts or requires modifications as per CBFC guidelines—now hinges entirely on the upcoming court order.
Fans Await Crucial Decision
The verdict has drawn heightened attention as Jana Nayagan is widely regarded as Thalapathy Vijay’s final film before his full-time entry into politics. Fans, trade analysts, and the Tamil film industry are closely watching the case, as the ruling will determine not just the movie’s release timeline but also its final form.
Clarity on the film’s certification and a potential new release date is expected only after the January 27 judgment.
