Congress leader and Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi has come out in support of Thalapathy Vijay’s upcoming film Jana Nayagan, which has been mired in controversy ahead of its release. After several Tamil actors voiced solidarity with the film, Gandhi criticized the government, alleging an attempt to suppress Tamil culture.

Gandhi posted his reaction on X, targeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Information & Broadcasting Ministry for allegedly blocking the film’s release. “The I&B Ministry’s attempt to halt Jana Nayagan is an attack on Tamil culture. Prime Minister Modi, you will never succeed in silencing the voice of Tamil people,” he wrote.

The film, widely believed to be Thalapathy Vijay’s final project before entering politics, has been facing certification-related hurdles. The makers have already approached the Supreme Court after a series of legal developments.

Madras High Court’s Earlier Order

Last week, the Madras High Court directed the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) to issue a U/A certificate for Jana Nayagan. The court observed that the CBFC chairperson had no authority to send the film to the Revising Committee after recommending that certification could be granted with certain cuts. The bench said that once the chairperson gave directions for certification post-cuts, further referral was invalid.

Following this, the producers demanded immediate issuance of the certificate and moved the court for relief.

Matter Reaches Supreme Court

Challenging the High Court’s ruling, the issue has now reached the Supreme Court. The petition argues that all mandatory processes must be completed before certifying a film and that the scope for review should remain open.

The Supreme Court has not yet scheduled a hearing, leaving the film’s release timeline uncertain and the controversy intensifying with political intervention and public debate.
