Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Monday sharply criticized the government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, alleging that it lacks a clear policy to address the ongoing cooking gas (LPG) crisis in the country.

In a post on social media platform X, Gandhi compared the current situation to the government’s handling of the COVID-19 pandemic, accusing it of making “big announcements” without adequate planning.

“The government said it would handle the LPG crisis like COVID—and it has done exactly that. No policy, big announcements, and the burden pushed onto the poor,” Gandhi wrote.

Impact on Workers and Households

Gandhi highlighted the growing financial strain on low-income groups, particularly migrant workers earning daily wages between ₹500 and ₹800. He said rising LPG prices have made cooking gas unaffordable for many.

“For workers returning home at night, even affording fuel to cook a meal has become difficult. The result—leave cities and return to villages,” he said.

He warned that the situation is triggering distress migration, echoing patterns seen during the pandemic lockdowns.

Concerns Over Industrial Slowdown

The Congress leader also pointed to broader economic implications, stating that key sectors such as textiles and manufacturing are under severe pressure.

“Workers who are the backbone of textile mills and factories are breaking. The textile sector is already in the ICU, and manufacturing is struggling to survive,” Gandhi said.

Blames Policy and Diplomatic Failures

Gandhi attributed the crisis to what he described as policy missteps and diplomatic failures, alleging that the government has not acknowledged its role.

“When arrogance becomes policy, the economy weakens, workers migrate, industries collapse, and the nation is pushed decades backward,” he stated.

Call for Public Accountability

Urging citizens not to remain silent, Gandhi raised concerns about the disproportionate impact of economic crises on vulnerable communities.

“The question remains—why does every crisis hit the poor first? This is not just their issue, it concerns all of us,” he added.
