PM Modi Odisha Development Projects took center stage on Saturday as Prime Minister Narendra Modi unveiled development initiatives worth more than ₹47,600 crore ($5.7 billion) in Odisha’s Mayurbhanj district, describing Eastern India as the country’s next major engine of economic growth.
Addressing a massive public gathering in Rairangpur, the Prime Minister said the region, which he claimed remained underdeveloped during previous Congress-led governments, is now emerging as a critical gateway for India’s future development under the Central government’s “Purvodaya” vision.
The projects, covering infrastructure, connectivity, welfare programs, and economic development, are expected to strengthen Odisha’s industrial base, improve public services, and generate employment opportunities across the state.
Eastern India Positioned as India’s New Growth Gateway
Speaking at the event, Modi emphasized that the government’s “Purvodaya” strategy aims to accelerate development in Eastern India and transform the region into a major contributor to the national economy.
According to the Prime Minister, states in eastern India possess significant natural resources, industrial potential, and human capital that can drive the country’s next phase of growth.
He said Odisha is rapidly advancing on the development path, with welfare initiatives improving the lives of millions and infrastructure investments creating new opportunities for businesses and local communities.
The Prime Minister also highlighted that Odisha has reportedly received investment proposals worth nearly ₹20 lakh crore, reflecting growing confidence among domestic and international investors.
Infrastructure and Welfare at the Core of Development Agenda
A significant portion of the newly announced projects is focused on strengthening infrastructure across Odisha.
Government officials said the initiatives include investments in transportation networks, public utilities, industrial development, and community welfare programs designed to improve living standards and support long-term economic growth.
Modi stated that infrastructure expansion remains one of the government’s highest priorities, adding that improved connectivity and modern facilities will help attract investment and create jobs in both urban and rural regions.
He noted that the benefits of development should reach citizens directly, reducing bureaucratic hurdles and improving access to government services.
Prime Minister Highlights ‘Double Engine Government’ Model
During his speech, Modi praised the cooperation between the Central government and Odisha’s BJP-led state administration, describing it as a “double engine government.”
According to the Prime Minister, coordinated governance allows faster implementation of development programs and ensures that welfare benefits reach eligible citizens more efficiently.
He said the government’s objective is to deliver services directly to people rather than forcing citizens to navigate complex administrative processes to resolve everyday issues.
Odisha Celebrates Cultural Heritage Alongside Development
The Prime Minister also referred to Odisha’s vibrant cultural traditions, noting that the state recently celebrated Raja Parba and is preparing for the world-famous Rath Yatra of Lord Jagannath.
He said the atmosphere of celebration across Odisha reflects both the state’s rich heritage and its growing confidence as development accelerates.
Modi described the combination of democratic participation, cultural pride, and economic progress as a positive sign for Odisha’s future.
PM Visits President Droupadi Murmu’s In-Laws’ Village
The visit carried additional significance as it coincided with the birthday of President Droupadi Murmu.
Extending his greetings to the President, Modi praised her contributions to public life and said her journey from Odisha to the country’s highest constitutional office remains a source of pride for the nation.
As part of his visit, the Prime Minister traveled to Pahadpur village, the President’s in-laws’ village in Mayurbhanj district.
He also visited a local school, interacted with students, and spent time learning about educational initiatives in the area. Modi described the interaction as a valuable and enriching experience.
PM-JANMAN Initiative Aims to Reach Vulnerable Tribal Communities
The Prime Minister also spoke about the PM-JANMAN initiative, which focuses on Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups (PVTGs).
He said the program was shaped through discussions and guidance from President Murmu and seeks to ensure that development reaches tribal communities that have historically remained on the margins.
According to Modi, the government is actively connecting tribal youth with educational opportunities, skill development programs, and employment pathways.
He noted that nearly 500 Eklavya Model Residential Schools have been established across India to support quality education for tribal students.
Odisha’s Development Journey Gains Momentum
With projects worth more than ₹47,600 crore now underway, Odisha is expected to witness substantial improvements in infrastructure, investment, and employment generation over the coming years.
The latest announcements reinforce the government’s broader strategy of positioning Eastern India as a major contributor to national growth while expanding welfare outreach and economic opportunities across underserved regions.
As Odisha continues to attract investment and infrastructure funding, policymakers view the state as one of the key drivers of India’s long-term development agenda.
