New Delhi, India – March 8, 2026
Prime Minister Narendra Modi marked International Women’s Day by inaugurating key metro expansions and announcing a major development package for Delhi, delivering what officials described as a transformative boost to the national capital’s public transport and urban infrastructure.
In a high-profile event, PM Modi commissioned two new Delhi Metro corridors, including the much-awaited Majlis Park–Shiv Vihar section that completes India’s first-ever Ring Metro line. This circular corridor, spanning key residential and commercial zones, is expected to significantly reduce travel time, ease road congestion, and improve connectivity across North, East, and West Delhi. The second inaugurated corridor further strengthens the metro network’s reach in densely populated areas.
The Prime Minister also performed the bhoomi pujan (foundation stone laying) for three additional metro corridors under Phase IV, set to further expand the system and integrate underserved regions.
Alongside the metro launches, PM Modi unveiled a comprehensive development package valued at ₹33,500 crore. This includes redevelopment of General Pool Residential Accommodation (GPRA) colonies to provide modern, high-quality housing for central government employees, along with other urban infrastructure initiatives aimed at improving living standards, sustainability, and mobility in Delhi.
The announcements come as part of the government’s continued focus on world-class public transport and urban renewal. Delhi Metro officials noted that the Ring Metro’s operationalization marks a major milestone, making Delhi one of the few global cities with a fully functional orbital rail network.
Speaking at the event, PM Modi highlighted the role of women in nation-building and emphasized how enhanced connectivity would empower citizens, create jobs, and support economic growth. The timing on March 8 was symbolic, aligning infrastructure progress with gender equality and inclusive development themes.
These projects are anticipated to benefit millions of daily commuters and residents, reinforcing Delhi’s position as a leading metropolitan hub with modern mass transit.
