Prime Minister Narendra Modi intensified the Bharatiya Janata Party’s campaign in West Bengal on Thursday, launching a sharp attack on the ruling All India Trinamool Congress government and urging voters to support a political shift in the state.

Addressing a large public rally in East Midnapore, PM Modi said the upcoming state election is “not ordinary” but crucial for restoring Bengal’s pride and laying the foundation for a developed future. He asserted that voters are prepared to remove the government led by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.

“Foundation for a Developed Bengal”

PM Modi described the election as a turning point, stating that building a “developed Bengal” would require replacing what he called a “harsh and ineffective government.” He accused the TMC administration of obstructing development and slowing the state’s progress.

Highlighting India’s broader economic growth, the Prime Minister said the country remains one of the fastest-growing economies globally. However, he claimed that West Bengal has lagged behind due to the current state leadership.

He also outlined six key guarantees promised by the BJP, including restoring public trust, acting against corruption, enforcing accountability, strengthening law enforcement, addressing illegal infiltration, and implementing the Seventh Pay Commission benefits for government employees.

Fisheries and Seafood Sector Under Scrutiny

PM Modi criticized the state government over its handling of the fisheries and seafood sector, noting that West Bengal has significant potential but has not achieved self-sufficiency in fish production.

He alleged that despite high demand, the state still depends on imports from other regions. “Even after years in power, the government has failed to meet basic needs like fish supply,” he said, attributing the situation to policy shortcomings.

The Prime Minister added that India’s overall fish production and seafood exports have doubled over the past decade, contrasting it with what he described as stagnation in West Bengal.

Allegations on Jobs and Youth Issues

Focusing on employment, PM Modi accused the state government of failing young people. He said job opportunities in the private sector remain limited and alleged irregularities in public sector recruitment.

He further claimed that corruption has affected hiring processes, while some employment opportunities are being diverted away from local youth.

Referring to industrial regions like Haldia, PM Modi said that areas once known for attracting workers nationwide are now witnessing migration of local youth to other states in search of jobs.

Claims on Governance and Welfare Schemes

The Prime Minister also accused the state government of not properly implementing central welfare schemes. He alleged that some programs have been renamed or not executed, affecting intended beneficiaries.

Citing schemes such as housing and healthcare initiatives, PM Modi claimed that political differences have hindered their rollout, impacting access for economically weaker sections.

Political Stakes High

The rallies mark PM Modi’s second visit to West Bengal since the election campaign intensified. Political observers view these events as strategically important, particularly in regions like Haldia and Asansol, where the BJP aims to strengthen its presence.

With the election approaching, the campaign rhetoric is expected to intensify as both major parties seek to consolidate voter support across key constituencies.
