Severe Heatwaves Grips Northern India :  Before the onset of the monsoon in Kerala, heavy rains have lashed the northeastern regions, while five states in northern India are reeling under an intense heatwave. Western Rajasthan and Delhi are witnessing extreme temperatures, with the mercury soaring to unprecedented levels. On Tuesday, more than four dozen locations recorded maximum temperatures exceeding 45 degrees Celsius. The highest temperature was recorded in Churu, Rajasthan, at 50.5 degrees Celsius. Delhi also saw soaring temperatures, with Mangeshpur and Narela reaching 49.9 degrees Celsius.

Cyclone in the Arabian Sea to Bring Respite

Amidst this oppressive heat, there is good news for India as a cyclone is forming over the Arabian Sea. This will alter wind patterns and bring much-needed relief. Over the next two to three days, winds will start blowing from the northwest to the east, leading to a drop in maximum temperatures. Rain is also expected between June 1st and 2nd, which, although not widespread or substantial, will provide some cooling relief to the parched land.

Weather Department’s Forecast

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) predicts that regions like Punjab, Haryana, Western Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Madhya Pradesh will continue to experience heatwave conditions on Tuesday. However, from Wednesday onwards, there will be an improvement. The temperature is expected to drop by four to five degrees Celsius by May 31st. Western Rajasthan will also begin to see some relief starting tomorrow.

Expected Rainfall and Temperature Drop

Starting from May 30th, the impact of winds blowing from the Arabian Sea will result in rainfall in Delhi, Punjab, and Haryana over the next two to three days. This will lead to a noticeable drop in temperatures for the coming days. While significant relief cannot be expected until there is heavy, sustained rainfall, these initial showers will bring a much-needed respite from the relentless heat.
