As the weather undergoes significant changes across North India, Delhi-NCR and its neighboring states are bracing for another spell of severe cold. With the minimum temperature fluctuating and cold winds dominating the evening and night, the region is gearing up for an icy winter resurgence. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued rain alerts and cold wave warnings across multiple states, signaling a challenging time ahead for residents.

Delhi-NCR Weather Update: Rain Expected in the Coming Days

The capital region has been experiencing daytime relief with sunny skies providing some respite from the chill. However, the situation is set to change. According to the IMD, rain is expected in Delhi-NCR over the next two to three days, driven by two Western Disturbances approaching the western Himalayan region. While today’s weather (January 28) is predicted to remain dry, light to moderate rainfall could bring a fresh wave of cold to the region starting tomorrow.

The dual impact of Western Disturbances is anticipated to intensify the chill, especially during evenings and nights. Commuters and residents should prepare for reduced visibility due to fog and damp conditions caused by intermittent showers.

Punjab and Haryana Brace for Severe Weather Conditions

Severe Cold Grips Punjab

Punjab is experiencing the brunt of the cold wave, worsened by snowfall in the nearby Himalayan ranges and biting winds. Monday brought freezing conditions to several areas, and the IMD has forecast dense fog in many parts of the state today. The combination of fog and low temperatures is expected to disrupt normal life, especially during early mornings and late evenings.

Cold Wave and Frost in Haryana

Haryana’s southwestern districts are under a frost warning, with meteorologists advising farmers and residents to take necessary precautions. The IMD has also issued a yellow alert for a cold wave in seven districts, while six districts face the threat of dense fog. Such conditions are likely to persist throughout the day, exacerbating the winter hardships for the state’s residents.

Cold Wave Intensifies in Rajasthan

Rajasthan is witnessing an intense cold wave, with many areas reporting a sharp decline in temperatures. The impact of cold winds and snowfall in the northern mountains has trickled down to Rajasthan, leaving residents struggling to cope with the biting cold. Local authorities have urged people to remain vigilant, particularly during the early hours, when the cold is most severe.

Snowfall and Rain in Jammu and Kashmir

The picturesque valleys of Jammu and Kashmir are currently under a spell of heavy snowfall and rainfall. The IMD predicts that these conditions will persist from January 29 to February 2, amplifying the chill across the region. As Chillai Kalan—the harshest 40-day winter period—draws to a close on January 31, residents are preparing for the next phase of winter, Chillai-Khurd (a 20-day period of less intense cold) and Chillai-Bachcha (a milder 10-day cold season).

Despite the end of Chillai Kalan, snowfall will continue to impact daily life, particularly in the higher altitudes, where transportation and connectivity are frequently disrupted.

Dense Fog and Cold Wave Alert in Bihar

The IMD has issued a yellow alert for dense fog across ten districts in Bihar. The combination of fog and cold winds is likely to reduce visibility significantly, making travel hazardous during the early hours. Residents are advised to stay indoors during peak fog hours and take precautions to combat the frigid weather.
