Rain Alert: February 10–13 – Heavy Rain and Snowfall Expected Across Several States in India
As India braces for unpredictable weather patterns, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a rain alert for several regions from February 10 to 13, 2025. The country is expected to witness heavy rainfall, snowfall, and cold wave conditions due to the activation of a western disturbance. This article provides in-depth details on the weather changes, affected regions, and precautionary measures to take over the coming days.
What is a Western Disturbance?
A western disturbance is a weather phenomenon originating from the Mediterranean region that moves eastward, impacting the Indian subcontinent, particularly during the winter months. It is associated with cloud formation, precipitation (rain and snow), and significant temperature drops. These disturbances often bring snowfall to the Himalayan region and rainfall to parts of North and North-West India.
The current disturbance, which is already active, is set to impact several states across the country, with varying weather consequences in the affected areas.

States Most Affected by Rain and Snowfall
1. Jammu & Kashmir
The Jammu and Kashmir region is expected to experience heavy snowfall between February 10 and 13. High-altitude areas such as Gulmarg and Pahalgam will see substantial snowfall, while Srinagar could receive rainfall mixed with snow, leading to colder temperatures. The weather conditions are likely to lead to disruptions in transportation due to snow-blocked roads and low visibility. Tourists are advised to take necessary precautions when traveling in the region.
2. Himachal Pradesh
In Himachal Pradesh, particularly in Shimla, Kullu, and Manali, the western disturbance will bring significant rainfall and snowfall. The IMD has forecasted heavy snow for the mountainous areas, while the plains will experience moderate rainfall. The state could also see a sharp dip in temperatures, and the IMD has warned about possible cold wave conditions. The state government has been urged to take precautions regarding traffic disruptions, especially on national highways that are vulnerable to snow accumulation.
3. Arunachal Pradesh
The northeastern state of Arunachal Pradesh is expected to be heavily impacted by the western disturbance. With the possibility of heavy rainfall and snowfall, this state will experience cooler temperatures and strong winds. Local authorities have advised people to stay alert for possible flash floods in some low-lying areas. Areas like Tawang and Bomdila will experience snow, with severe cold expected in the region.
4. Rajasthan
Though not as severely affected by snowfall, Rajasthan will experience a significant increase in temperatures. The IMD has forecasted a rise in minimum and maximum temperatures by 2-3°C across most regions, including Jaipur, Jodhpur, and Udaipur. Although this will reduce the chill in the mornings and evenings, it will also make the afternoons feel warmer. Daytime temperatures in areas like Bikaner and Barmer are expected to increase by up to 4°C.
5. Delhi
In the National Capital Region (NCR), Delhi is witnessing a rise in temperatures. On February 9, the maximum temperature recorded was 27°C, which is 4°C higher than the normal for the season. The minimum temperature has also been relatively low, with an average of 7°C—slightly cooler than expected for February. The change in temperature has brought some respite from the winter chill, but mild rain is expected on February 10 and 11, providing temporary relief to residents. The increased humidity in the air will make the days feel warmer than usual, so precautions must be taken for respiratory health.
Cold Wave and Strong Winds Across the Country
In addition to rainfall and snowfall, the western disturbance is also bringing cold wave conditions to several northern and central parts of India. As cold winds sweep through the plains, cities like Delhi, Punjab, Haryana, and Chandigarh are expected to experience strong winds with speeds reaching up to 30 km/h. These cold winds could intensify the winter chill, especially in the mornings and evenings.
While the winds will be a significant concern, the temperatures will continue to drop, particularly in the Himalayan foothills. In cities like Lucknow and Agra, the wind chill factor will make it feel colder than the actual temperature. Residents are urged to wear warm clothing and take extra care during outdoor activities.
Rainfall and Temperature Fluctuations in Uttar Pradesh
The IMD has forecasted that Uttar Pradesh will remain largely dry and clear for the next week, with little chance of rainfall. However, temperature fluctuations are expected. The maximum temperature is predicted to rise by 3-4°C by mid-February, making the days feel hotter than usual. The region is also likely to experience some mild fog in the mornings, which will dissipate by midday.
Though rainfall is not anticipated in Uttar Pradesh, the dry weather combined with the increased temperatures may cause discomfort for those unprepared for the heat. Urban areas such as Lucknow and Kanpur may experience mild heat waves towards the end of the week, requiring hydration and protection from the sun.
