Nirjala Ekadashi 2023: Fasting, Puja Method, Significance, Time and Story

According to the Hindu calendar, this time the Ekadashi date of Shukla Paksha of Jyestha month is starting from Tuesday, May 30 at 01:07 pm. This date will end the next day on May 31, Wednesday, at 01:45 pm. In such a situation, this time Nirjala Ekadashi will be celebrated on 31 May 2023.

Nirjala Ekadashi fast worship method

Devotees who are not able to observe fast on all the Ekadashis of the year must observe Nirjala Ekadashi fast. Because by observing this fast one gets virtue equal to all other Ekadashis. The method of this fast is as follows:

1. In this fast, water and food are not taken from the sunrise of Ekadashi date till the next day sunrise of Dwadashi date.

2. On the day of Ekadashi, after taking bath in the morning, first of all worship Lord Vishnu according to the rules and regulations. After this chant Om Namo Bhagwate Vasudevaya mantra while meditating on God.

3. On this day one should listen to the story with devotion and do kirtan of God.

4. On this day, a fasting person should fill an urn with water and cover it with a white cloth and donate sugar and dakshina on it to a Brahmin.

After this, the ritual of this fast is completed by doing charity, charity etc. From the point of view of religious importance, the fruit of this fast is believed to give long life, health as well as destroy all sins.

Importance of donation on Nirjala Ekadashi

By observing this Ekadashi fast, you should donate food, water, clothes, seat, shoes, umbrella, feather and fruits etc. as per your capacity. Devotees who donate water urn on this day get the fruits of Ekadashis throughout the year. By fasting on this Ekadashi, the fault of eating food on other Ekadashis is removed and the benefit of the virtue of all Ekadashis is also received. One who observes fast on this holy Ekadashi with devotion, becomes free from all sins and attains an imperishable position.

Importance of donation on Nirjala Ekadashi

During the time of Mahabharata, once Pandu’s son Bhim asked Maharishi Ved Vyas ji – “O most respected Munivar! Everyone in my family observes Ekadashi fast and asks me to observe the fast too. But I cannot stay hungry, so you kindly tell me how to get the fruit of Ekadashi without fasting.

On Bhima’s request, Ved Vyas ji said- “Son, you fast on Nirjala Ekadashi, it is called Nirjala Ekadashi. On this day both food and water have to be sacrificed. Any person who remains without drinking water from the sunrise of Ekadashi date to the sunrise of Dwadashi date and observes Nirjala fast with true devotion, he gets the fruits of all the Ekadashis that come in a year by fasting on this one Ekadashi. After listening to the words of Maharishi Ved Vyas, Bhimsen started observing Nirjala Ekadashi fast and became free from sins.
