Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney began his official visit to India with a cultural reception in Mumbai hosted by Mukesh Ambani and Nita Ambani, before holding high-level strategic discussions with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi.
The visit, held from February 27 to March 2 at the invitation of Prime Minister Modi, marks Carney’s first official trip to India since assuming office.
Cultural Welcome in Mumbai
During his Mumbai stop, Carney and his wife, Diana Fox Carney, were welcomed at the Ambani residence. The evening featured Indian classical dance and folk music performances, highlighting India’s cultural heritage.
According to a statement from Reliance Industries, the meeting was cordial and focused on celebrating shared appreciation for heritage, friendship, and cultural exchange between the two countries.
The reception underscored the role of people-to-people engagement in strengthening diplomatic ties.
Strategic Talks in New Delhi
Following the Mumbai engagement, Prime Minister Carney arrived in New Delhi on Sunday evening. On Monday, he met Prime Minister Modi at Hyderabad House for delegation-level talks.
According to India’s Ministry of External Affairs, the discussions reviewed progress in the India–Canada strategic partnership and explored cooperation across key sectors, including:
Trade and investment
Energy security
Critical minerals
Agriculture
Education
Research and innovation
People-to-people ties
The leaders also exchanged views on regional and global developments.
Diplomatic Engagements With Indian Leadership
Earlier, India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar met with Carney in New Delhi and expressed appreciation for his commitment to advancing bilateral ties.
Jaishankar also held discussions with Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand on various bilateral matters, reaffirming mutual interest in strengthening diplomatic engagement.
Focus on Economic and CEO-Level Collaboration
Prime Minister Modi and Prime Minister Carney are also scheduled to participate in the India–Canada CEO Forum, aimed at enhancing private-sector collaboration and identifying new investment opportunities.
The visit comes at a time when both countries are working toward stabilizing and normalizing bilateral relations while expanding strategic and economic cooperation.
Officials from both sides have indicated that energy collaboration and long-term trade growth remain central pillars of the partnership.
