India’s largest airline IndiGo has announced an increase in the fuel surcharge on all domestic and international routes, a move that is likely to make air travel more expensive for passengers.
According to the airline’s official statement, the revised surcharge rates will come into effect from 12:01 a.m. on March 14, 2026. Passengers booking tickets from this date onward may see higher fares compared to previous bookings.
Aviation Fuel Prices Driving the Increase
Aviation turbine fuel (ATF) is one of the largest cost components for airlines, accounting for a significant share of operational expenses.
Airlines including IndiGo have said that the recent sharp increase in fuel prices has placed pressure on airline budgets and operational networks.
To offset these rising costs, airlines often adjust ticket prices through fuel surcharges, which are added to the base airfare.
Air India Also Introduced Fuel Surcharge
IndiGo’s decision follows a similar move by Air India and Air India Express, which recently introduced a fuel surcharge on domestic tickets.
Under their new pricing structure:
A fuel surcharge of ₹399 per ticket was introduced for domestic flights.
The new charge took effect from March 12, 2026.
The surcharge also applies to flights to SAARC (South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation) countries.
Air India stated that the revised surcharge system would be implemented in phases.

With multiple airlines introducing or increasing fuel surcharges, passengers may see higher ticket prices across several routes in the coming weeks.
Industry analysts note that fluctuations in global aviation fuel prices frequently influence airfare trends, especially during periods of rising demand and operating costs.
