New Delhi, India — April 7, 2026
India is witnessing a significant shift in weather patterns as two active western disturbances impact large parts of the country, bringing widespread rain, thunderstorms, hailstorms, and snowfall, according to the India Meteorological Department.
The changing conditions have affected regions from the western Himalayan belt to eastern and central India, with authorities issuing alerts for severe weather events through April 10.
Rain, Snowfall, and Strong Winds Across Regions
Weather activity intensified over the past 24 hours, with light to moderate rainfall recorded across several regions, while higher altitudes in the Himalayas experienced heavy snowfall.
States including Jammu & Kashmir, Uttar Pradesh, and eastern Madhya Pradesh reported hailstorms and gusty winds. Wind speeds in parts of the Indo-Gangetic plains reached between 30 to 70 km/h, accompanied by rainfall.
IMD Issues Alert Till April 10
According to the IMD, a strong western disturbance is currently active over Pakistan and adjoining Punjab in the upper atmosphere, supported by a low-pressure system. This combination is driving instability across northern and central India.
Additionally, cyclonic circulations in multiple regions are further intensifying weather activity, increasing the likelihood of thunderstorms and lightning strikes.
Cold winds blowing at speeds of up to 80 nautical miles over central and eastern India are strengthening these systems, raising the risk of severe weather conditions.
Increased Risk of Thunderstorms and Lightning
Meteorologists warn of heightened thunderstorm and lightning activity in several regions. The combination of atmospheric instability and strong wind currents is likely to trigger:
- Thunderstorms with lightning
- Gusty winds and dust storms
- Hailstorms in isolated areas
- Sudden temperature drops
Jammu & Kashmir Faces Landslide, Avalanche Risks
In Jammu & Kashmir, snowfall and rainfall have impacted higher-altitude regions, with hail reported in areas such as Shopian and Kulgam. The Aharbal region in Shopian has been among the worst affected by hailstorms.
Authorities have issued warnings for possible landslides and avalanches in vulnerable zones. Cloud cover persisted throughout the day in Srinagar and nearby plains, keeping temperatures low and conditions chilly.
Weather fluctuations are expected to continue until April 16, with forecasts indicating rain in plains and snowfall in higher altitudes over the next two days.
Weather Outlook
- Active western disturbances to persist till April 10
- Rain and thunderstorms across north, central, and eastern India
- Heavy snowfall in Himalayan regions
- Risk of hailstorms and strong winds in plains
- Possible landslides and avalanches in hilly areas
