India’s weather is witnessing sharp contrasts from north to south, with snowfall in the Himalayan regions, rain and thunderstorms across the plains, and cold wave and dense fog conditions affecting daily life in several states.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), continued activity of Western Disturbances is keeping North India’s weather unstable, while strong winds over southern seas have raised concerns for fishermen. The IMD has warned that these conditions may persist for the next few days, with three Western Disturbances likely to impact the western Himalayan region over the next seven days.
Western Disturbance Active Over North India
IMD officials stated that since February 3, a Western Disturbance has remained active as a cyclonic circulation over Punjab and Haryana, accompanied by an upper-air trough. Another fresh system is expected to affect the western Himalayas from the night of February 5.
The combined impact of these systems is bringing light rain in some areas, snowfall in higher reaches, and dense fog in the plains.
Snowfall Likely in Uttarakhand’s Higher Reaches
Weather conditions in Uttarakhand have turned active again since February 3. IMD forecasts light rain and snowfall above 2,500 meters, with fresh snow likely in pilgrimage areas including Gangotri, Badrinath, and Kedarnath.
Thunderstorms and Strong Winds in Plains
Parts of western Uttar Pradesh may witness thunderstorms with rainfall and gusty winds reaching 30–40 km/h.
IMD has also issued warnings for lightning strikes in isolated areas of eastern Rajasthan, eastern Uttar Pradesh, and Madhya Pradesh.
Delhi-NCR Under Yellow Alert for Dense Fog
The IMD has issued a Yellow Alert for Delhi and surrounding NCR areas due to dense fog, especially during early morning hours. Visibility may drop significantly, potentially disrupting road, rail, and air traffic.
Drivers have been advised to maintain slow speeds and exercise caution. Dense fog may also affect parts of Bihar, Haryana, Chandigarh, Odisha, Punjab, Rajasthan, and western Madhya Pradesh, while some areas of Uttar Pradesh could experience very dense fog, increasing the risk of road accidents.
Drizzle in Srinagar, Snow in Higher Kashmir Regions
In Srinagar and nearby plains, light drizzle was recorded from Monday night through Tuesday morning and again in the evening. Higher altitude regions experienced snowfall, with temperatures in Pahalgam and Gulmarg dropping below freezing.
The IMD has indicated that weather in Kashmir is likely to remain mostly dry from Wednesday, although cloud cover may persist in some areas.
Cold Wave Continues in Himachal Pradesh
Several parts of Himachal Pradesh continue to reel under a cold wave. Light to moderate rain and snowfall are possible at isolated locations in Kinnaur, Chamba, and Lahaul-Spiti.
Both Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand may also experience thunderstorms, lightning, and strong winds of 30–40 km/h, IMD added.
