Weather Forecast: Changing Weather Pattern Brings Rain, Snowfall, and Falling Temperatures
There is no immediate relief from the changing weather conditions across northwest and central India. Rain and snowfall are expected to continue in the western Himalayan region and adjoining plains till February 3, keeping temperatures low and winter chill intact.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), strong winds blowing at speeds of 30–40 kmph may accompany the precipitation. Due to this, minimum temperatures could drop by 2–4°C over the next three days, intensifying cold conditions across several regions.
Dense fog is also likely during morning and night hours in parts of Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, and Uttar Pradesh, affecting visibility and travel.
🌬️ Western Disturbance Active Over North India
IMD officials said a western disturbance is currently active as a cyclonic circulation in the lower and middle tropospheric levels over northern Pakistan and adjoining areas. Additionally, a low-pressure area has formed over southern Haryana and northern Rajasthan, further influencing weather activity.
Another western disturbance is expected to become active between February 5 and 7, which may extend the spell of rain and snowfall in the western Himalayan region.
❄️ Kashmir Valley: Cold Winds Return
After three days of brief relief, Kashmir Valley witnessed light rainfall in Srinagar and nearby plains on Sunday, while higher-altitude areas recorded snowfall. The fresh spell led to a sharp drop in daytime temperatures, with maximum temperatures falling by nearly 4°C.
The weather department has forecast light rain or snowfall in higher reaches during the nights of February 2 and 3, with cold winds continuing to sweep through the region.
🌧️ Haryana Sees Rain and Hailstorms
Western disturbance effects were also visible in Haryana, where light rainfall was recorded in six districts. Isolated hailstorms were reported in areas including Karnal, Yamunanagar, and Rohtak.
Weather expert Dr. Chandramohan stated that the disturbance, which became active on the night of January 31, has created a low-pressure zone over eastern Rajasthan and southern Haryana, and its impact is expected to last until Tuesday afternoon.
⚡ Himachal Pradesh: Storm and Snowfall Alert
In Himachal Pradesh, snowfall was recorded in higher reaches of Kinnaur, Shimla, Sirmaur, Kullu, Lahaul-Spiti, Mandi, and Chamba districts. Rainfall in mid and lower hill districts increased the cold.
A lightning strike in Solan resulted in the death of 54 sheep and goats, highlighting the severity of weather conditions. IMD has issued an alert for thunderstorms and gusty winds over the next 24 hours, with rain and snowfall likely to continue in higher and mid-hill regions on Monday and Tuesday.
The coldest place in the state was Tabo in Lahaul-Spiti, where the minimum temperature dropped to –3.6°C.
🌡️ Rajasthan Gets Partial Relief from Severe Cold
Rajasthan experienced slight relief from severe cold as minimum temperatures rose above 7°C at most locations. Alwar recorded the lowest minimum temperature at 7.2°C.
Due to the western disturbance, Ajmer received 1.1 mm of rainfall in the last 24 hours. Weather conditions are expected to remain similar for at least another day.
