India Strengthens LPG Supply Chain as Tankers Approach Western Ports
Amid ongoing geopolitical tensions in West Asia, the Indian government has intensified efforts to secure domestic cooking gas supplies and stabilize the country’s energy logistics network. Two large LPG carriers carrying a combined 92,700 metric tons of liquefied petroleum gas are currently sailing toward India after crossing the strategically critical Strait of Hormuz, officials confirmed on Saturday.
The vessels, named Shivalik and Nanda, are part of a coordinated energy logistics operation aimed at ensuring uninterrupted LPG availability for households and industries across the country.
Gas Tankers Headed to Mundra and Kandla Ports
According to the Ministry of Shipping, both LPG tankers are scheduled to anchor at major ports on India’s western coast — Mundra Port and Kandla Port. The shipments are expected to reach Indian shores on March 16 and March 17, significantly strengthening the domestic energy supply.
Officials said the arrival of such a large LPG shipment will help maintain adequate supply levels in the domestic market while meeting growing demand from both industrial users and household consumers.
Surge in Cylinder Bookings Triggers Advisory
The government has also noted a sharp rise in LPG cylinder bookings in recent days, largely driven by public concern over global geopolitical developments.
Sujata Sharma, Joint Secretary in the Ministry of Petroleum, said authorities are closely monitoring the situation but confirmed that no LPG shortage has been reported so far.
She revealed that daily booking numbers have increased significantly.
“Earlier booking figures were around 7.5 to 7.6 million, but they have now risen to approximately 8.8 million bookings,” Sharma said.
The ministry clarified that booking restrictions remain in place to prevent unnecessary demand pressure.
In urban areas, a minimum gap of 25 days is required between two LPG bookings.
In rural areas, the gap is 45 days.
Consumers attempting to book before the required interval may experience booking failures.
Government Encourages Digital LPG Booking
Authorities urged consumers to avoid visiting distributor centers and instead use digital booking options such as:
IVRS booking
SMS booking
WhatsApp booking
Official mobile apps of Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs)
Officials emphasized that oil companies continue to deliver LPG cylinders directly to households, and there is no need for panic buying or standing in long queues.
Commercial LPG Distribution Begins Across States
Following discussions with state governments, the central government has also allocated a defined quota of LPG for commercial cylinders to ensure supply continuity for businesses and restaurants.
Officials confirmed that commercial LPG distribution has already begun in 29 states and Union Territories, with supplies reaching consumers.
Currently, around 84% of LPG bookings are being made online, though authorities aim to push the figure closer to 100% digital booking adoption.
30 Indian Sailors Safely Return Home
In another development related to maritime operations, the government confirmed that 30 Indian sailors have safely returned to India within the last 24 hours.
The safe return highlights ongoing efforts to protect Indian maritime personnel working in global shipping routes amid heightened regional tensions.
Nationwide Crackdown on LPG Black Marketing
Alongside supply stabilization measures, authorities have launched a nationwide enforcement drive against LPG black marketing and hoarding.
Joint inspection teams are conducting coordinated raids across multiple states to prevent artificial shortages in the domestic market.
In Uttar Pradesh, enforcement agencies carried out raids at around 1,400 locations, leading to legal cases against 19 individuals found involved in irregular activities.
Similar raids are ongoing in several other states including:
Odisha
Andhra Pradesh
Maharashtra
Rajasthan
Officials say these actions are intended to ensure that LPG reaches genuine consumers without disruption.
Outlook: Strong Supply and Strict Enforcement
With the arrival of 92,700 metric tons of LPG at Mundra and Kandla ports on March 16–17, India is expected to significantly boost its energy reserves.
Combined with strict enforcement against black marketing and coordinated logistics planning, the government aims to maintain a stable LPG supply chain while ensuring fair distribution across the country.
