India is facing a tightening supply of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) as oil marketing companies roll out new booking and delivery rules, significantly extending waiting periods for domestic consumers. The revised guidelines, now in immediate effect, could delay cylinder delivery by up to 45 days for certain households.
According to Arun Kumar, President of the UP LPG Association and Ghaziabad LPG Association, the updated policy has been implemented across distribution agencies. Under the new framework, households with two LPG cylinders will now receive refills only after a minimum gap of 35 days. For beneficiaries under the government’s Ujjwala scheme, the waiting period has been extended further to 45 days.
Consumers with a single cylinder will receive refills after 25 days, making it the shortest delivery cycle under the new system. However, the changes are expected to impact millions of households, particularly in densely populated regions where demand remains consistently high.
The supply restrictions also extend to commercial LPG cylinders. Officials confirmed that commercial gas supplies are currently being prioritized for essential services and educational institutions, limiting availability for other business users.
Earlier Measures by Oil Companies
The latest move follows earlier steps taken by Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) to regulate LPG consumption amid supply concerns. Under a recently introduced system, consumers who have already exhausted their annual quota of 12 subsidized cylinder refills must undergo an additional verification process before placing a new booking.
Users are required to log in to the “Hello BPCL” mobile application and provide detailed information, including household size, presence of guests, and whether there are upcoming events such as weddings or community gatherings. Only after submitting this information can a new cylinder booking be approved.
Key Questions Asked During Booking
Consumers exceeding their annual quota may be required to answer the following:
- Whether the household has six or more members
- If guests are currently staying at the residence
- Whether a wedding, feast, or event is planned
- Any other specific domestic requirement
Impact and Outlook
The stricter rules indicate ongoing pressure on LPG supply chains, potentially driven by rising demand and logistical constraints. While authorities have not officially termed the situation a “crisis,” the extended delivery timelines and tighter controls suggest a significant effort to manage limited resources.
Consumers are advised to plan their LPG usage carefully and book refills well in advance to avoid disruptions.
